Team World coach John McEnroe hilariously shot down a reporter asking him about his post-captaincy plans since Team World's final defeat at the 2024 Laver Cup saddened him. Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev ousted their American counterparts in the last two singles to claim the champion's trophy for Team Europe.
Alcaraz and Casper Ruud of Team Europe defeated Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton 6-2, 7-6(6) to get a lead in the doubles on Sunday. Not long after, Shelton triumphed over Daniil Medvedev 6-7(6), 7-5, 10-7 in the singles, earning an 11-7 lead. The ultimate win depended on Taylor Fritz and Tiafoe, who went against Alcaraz and Zverev in the final singles match-ups.
Team Europe player Zverev defeated the American 6-7(6), 7-5, 10-5, and the Spaniard earned the final victory over the US Open finalist, Fritz, 6-2, 7-5, 6-2, 7-5.
Captain John McEnroe was especially disappointed with the loss and hilariously slammed the reporter in a post-event conference. When asked about his plans after captaincy, McEnroe said he was not in the state to think since the victory champagne in honor of Team World's prospective three-peat was about to open when the Americans lost to Team Europe in the last two match-ups.
"I was just ready for the three-peat and celebrate. And I would be in a different state of mind, perhaps slightly inebriated. But unfortunately, I saw, it's like the champagne was in our room. I felt like, maybe I jumped to conclusions. It was turning, and I was just like, OK, here we are. I'm going out three in a row," John McEnroe said.
McEnroe then shared the latest turn of events, leaving Fritz, Tiafoe, and Shelton in splits.
"Then suddenly, now I'm sitting here talking to you, and you're asking me for my goddamn moments from the last seven years. Let's talk about it another day, if you don't mind. We'll put it in the Labor Cup magazine."
Frances Tiafoe chimes in as John McEnroe talks about Laver Cup loss

Frances Tiafoe came fresh off his US Open stint and continued his strong form at the Laver Cup against Alexander Zverev, leading by a set and a tiebreak. He said (via Laver Cup):
"I gave everything I have. I really thought I was in winning positions, thought I was the better player today."
On the other hand, Taylor Fritz shared that the vibes of the team members make Team World successful.
"The chemistry and the vibes between the group is a big part of what makes Team World. Every year, regardless [of the outcome], I think one thing that stays true is that… we’re having more fun at this event than the other team is.”
Andre Agassi will replace John McEnroe as the Team World captain, starting Laver Cup 2025.
