Tennis legend John McEnroe surprised his colleague Laura Robson by performing a heartfelt rendition of "Happy Birthday" during the 2025 Australian Open coverage. The spontaneous celebration took place during Eurosport's match analysis on Tuesday, January 21, as Robson celebrated her 31st birthday.
McEnroe is a key member of the Nine Network team in Australia and Eurosport in Europe, providing expert commentary, analysis, and in-depth insights during matches, and conducting player interviews. Alongside him is former British professional tennis player turned sports presenter Laura Robson. Robson, a member of Eurosport's broadcasting team, made it to the third round of the Australian Open in 2013.
During their match analysis, the Eurosport team presented Robson with a birthday cake, much to her surprise. McEnroe then burst into an enthusiastic rendition of "Happy Birthday", with the unexpected gesture leaving Robson beaming.
After the song, McEnroe humorously attempted to guess Robson's age, leading to a playful exchange.
McEnroe (counting aloud): "Are you one? Are you two? Are you three?"
Robson laughingly responded: "No, no, no, John, this is the year I stopped counting. We gave up counting last year already."
McEnroe, not missing a beat, continued: "Twenty-one."
Robson was quick to quip: "We're rounding down. It's now 22, yeah."
McEnroe concluded: "You're 22. OK. Well, have a good celebration."
John McEnroe made his feelings known on Novak Djokovic's medical timeout vs Carlos Alcaraz during Australian Open QF
John McEnroe shared her thoughts on the Novak Djokovic vs. Carlos Alcaraz's highly anticipated quarterfinal match at the 2025 Australian Open on Tuesday.
In the opening set, Alcaraz was ahead 5-4 and poised to serve for the set when Djokovic called for a medical timeout (MTO) for discomfort in the left leg. Despite the break, Alcaraz claimed the set 6-4. However, Djokovic shifted the momentum, breaking Alcaraz several times to win the next three sets and secure the match 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.
During his commentary, McEnroe pointed out that Djokovic’s use of the MTO appeared part of his usual "routine" and emphasized that viewers should not be "fooled" by it.
"This isn't the first time we've seen this routine. Don't be fooled," John McEnroe said.
Seventh seed Novak Djokovic advanced to his 12th Australian Open semifinal, where he will take on World No. 2 Alexander Zverev on January 23, 2025. This will be their 13th meeting on the ATP Tour, with their head-to-head record standing in favor of the Serb, 8-4.
