Leylah Fernandez recently tried her hand at the viral dance challenge to Rosé and Bruno Mars' hit song 'APT.' However, the attempt didn't go as planned, leading the 22-year-old to share a hilarious and self-deprecating reaction about her dancing skills.
Fernandez was recently in action at the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Malaga, representing the top seed and defending champions Canada. Squaring off against Great Britain in the semifinals, the 22-year-old had a lot of pressure on her shoulders as she attempted to keep her team's hopes alive after Emma Raducanu grabbed a 1-0 lead with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Rebecca Marino.
However, Leylah Fernandez was unable to triumph over Katie Boulter in the must-win clash, suffering a 6-2, 6-4 loss. The 22-year-old appears to have shaken off the disappointment as she used her downtime during the off-season to attempt the viral dance challenge on Rosé and Bruno Mars' popular track 'APT.'
The Canadian shared a hilarious clip of herself struggling to keep up with the steps and playfully expressing frustration with her mishaps.
"I guess I’m sticking to tennis 🤷♀️🙈," Fernandez captioned her Instagram post.
Interestingly, Fernandez showcased her skills to the same song just a week earlier with a much smoother performance.
"This is how I feel after a full day of practice with Team Canada 🇨🇦 😀 @tenniscanada," she posted.
"It's feedback, not failure" - Billie Jean King consoles Leylah Fernandez as Canadian expresses dismay after BJK Cup exit
Following Canada's semifinal exit at the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup Finals, Leylah Fernandez conveyed her dismay on social media, admitting that the loss was tough to swallow. Nevertheless, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent her country and the tremendous support they enjoyed in Malaga.
"This one hurts. Grateful for the opportunity to have played for Canada again and for the incredible support we received this week in Malaga 🇨🇦❤️," Fernandez captioned her Instagram post.
Tennis legend Billie Jean King left a heartwarming message for Fernandez in the comments section, encouraging the 22-year-old to view the loss as feedback instead of failure. King also shared that she was looking forward to following the Canadian's journey in the 2025 season.
"It's feedback, not failure. Looking forward to watching your continued journey in 2025," King commented.
Leylah Fernandez registered a 31-24 win/loss record for the year, falling short of winning a WTA title. The Canadian achieved her best Grand Slam result of 2024 at the French Open, reaching the third round before suffering a 6-4, 7-6(5) loss to Ons Jabeur.
