With the 2024 season concluded, players are taking time to recover and prepare for the 2025 season, and Leylah Fernandez is no exception. She recently shared a glimpse of her preseason practice sessions in Australia.
The Canadian wrapped up her season in November at the Hong Kong Open, where she reached the semifinals before being knocked out by Diana Shnaider.
Fernandez began her 2024 season at the Australian Open without participating in any pre-Grand Slam tournaments. If the Australian Open becomes her first tournament of 2025, it will mirror the start of her 2024 season. She finished the 2024 season ranked 31st on the WTA rankings and is No. 31 on the entry list for the Melbourne major as of December 13.
On Sunday, Fernandez shared a video on her Instagram feed showcasing her routine in Melbourne. With the text “A day in the life. Pre-season Australia" added to it as an overlay, the video featured clips of her practicing on the tennis court, sprinting on the track, recovering in an ice bath, and playing indoor golf.
“Cheers from the land down under” - She captioned the post.
Since turning pro in 2019, Leylah Fernandez has competed five times at the Australian Open but has yet to progress beyond the second round. She exited in the first round in her first three appearances and reached the second round in both 2023 and 2024.
A look back at when Leylah Fernandez reflected on the surge of teenagers at the 2024 Australian Open - "It Honestly Makes Me Feel Old"
At the 2024 Australian Open, after Leylah Fernandez defeated 17-year-old Sara Bejlek in the first round, she was asked by the press about her thoughts on the high number of teenagers participating in the tournament.
In response, the 22-year-old hilariously said that playing younger opponents reminds her of her early hunger to prove herself. Notably, Bejlek was one of the 11 teenagers who participated in the 2024 edition.
“It honestly makes me feel old (laughing). But, yeah, when I play against someone younger, it does make me think a little bit more of when I first started. I think that also helps because I remember when I started, I was hungry. I wanted to kind of prove myself that I could be here. I just knew that today she's going to have that same feeling, she's going to do that. She was playing really well.” Leylah Fernandes said
In 2021, 19-year-old Leylah Fernandez faced defeat at the hands of 18-year-old Emma Raducanu in the first all-teenage US Open final since Serena Williams beat Martina Hingis in 1999. Since then, Fernandez has won two trophies: the Monterrey Open in 2022 and the Hong Kong Open in 2023.
