Leylah Fernandez made waves in 2021 after her incredible performances at the US Open where she reached the final. The 21-year-old is currently gearing up for the 2024 Paris Olympics to represent Canada in women's tennis events.
This will be her second appearance at the Games. At the Tokyo Olympics, the Canadian showcased her aggressive play against Dayana Yastremska in the first round before going down to Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets in the next round.
The World No. 23 had a remarkable campaign at the 2021 US Open. Fernandez, who at the time was not even in the top 70, surprised everyone by trouncing highly ranked players such as Naomi Osaka and Elina Svitolina en route to the semifinal. She then defeated Aryna Sabalenka 7-6,4-6,6-4 to reach her first Grand Slam final where she lost to Emma Raducanu, who defeated the Canadian in straight sets.
She is now all geared up for the upcoming Paris Olympics, and recently took to her Instagram handle and shared a video of her falling asleep in her Olympics outfit.
"I'm actually counting down the days though," Fernandez wrote.
Leylah Fernandez, seeded 30th at the Wimbledon Championships, began her grass court Slam tournament with a straight-set win against Lucia Bronzetti before losing to Caroline Wozniacki 3-6,6-2,5-7, in the second round.
Leylah Fernandez joined by Felix Auger-Aliassime & Bianca Andreescu at Paris Olympics
Canada's tennis prospects are bright at the Olympics in Paris as Leylah Fernandez is joined by Felix Auger-Aliassime and Bianca Andreescu, forming a formidable squad on both the singles and doubles courts.
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, both Leylah Fernandez and Felix Auger Aliassime succumbed to first-round exits. Although a deep run was not to be, their records in other tournaments since then have pointed to a promising campaign for Canada in the upcoming Olympics.
While they are yet to convert their Grand Slam victories into Olympics success, Canadian tennis players have been thriving, with Bianca Andreescu's incredible US Open victory in 2019, along with Leylah Fernandez's stellar run to the 2021 US Open final. The same year, Aliassime reached the semifinals of the US Open, where he lost to Daniil Medvedev.
