In a jubilant atmosphere, Madison Keys momentarily forgot where her husband, Bjorn Fratangelo, was during her Australian Open victory speech on Saturday, January 25. The American has now won her first Grand Slam title, 16 years after making her debut on the WTA tour.
On Saturday, Keys faced two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka in the final of the 2025 Australian Open and triumphed with a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 victory to claim the title.
Sabalenka, who had won the 2025 Brisbane International, entered the final on an 11-match winning streak. A win in Melbourne would have made her the first woman to clinch three consecutive Australian Open titles since Martina Hingis achieved the feat between 1997 and 1999.
During the trophy presentation ceremony, Keys expressed gratitude to her team and everyone who had supported her journey. She made special mention of her husband but humorously searched for him while delivering her speech.
“Last year was so tough, I had a lot of injuries, I didn't know if I was ever going to do it again, to be here and have this trophy and also be able to do it with my husband,
(looks for Bjorn) I am kind of dazed and confused, over there. I love you all so much, I cannot wait for more and (pauses to ask where he is and turns around before finding him) Oh now I am dazed and confused” Madison Keys said (0:49)
A look at Madison Keys' Grand Slam journey before her Australian Open triumph
Madison Keys made her Grand Slam debut at the 2011 US Open. Four years later, in 2015, she reached her first Grand Slam semifinal at the Australian Open but was eliminated by Serena Williams.
In 2017, Keys came even closer to capturing a Grand Slam title when she reached the final of the US Open. In an all-American showdown, she faced Sloane Stephens but lost in straight sets. In 2018, Keys advanced to two Grand Slam semifinals at the French Open and the US Open but was outclassed by Sloane Stephens and Naomi Osaka, respectively.
The next impressive run for Keys at a Grand Slam came at the 2022 Australian Open, where she was defeated by eventual champion and home favorite Ashleigh Barty. In 2023, she reached another semifinal (US Open), only to be stopped by Aryna Sabalenka.
Finally, at the 2025 Australian Open, Madison Keys triumphed. Her victorious run included wins over Ann Li, Elena-Gabriela Ruse, Danielle Collins, Elena Rybakina, Elina Svitolina, and Iga Swiatek, culminating in a hard-fought victory against Aryna Sabalenka in the final.
