A mixed doubles tennis match went completely awry as a woman lashed out at her opponent and threw her racket at him because he directed a volley at her during the rally. She verbally abused the man as she left the court in fury.
A common strategy in doubles tennis is to have one of the two players playing at the net in order to take advantage of weaker returns and hit unanswerable volleys to win points. However, these volleys may often end up being hit right at the opposite team's player who is at the net as well.
It isn't uncommon in tennis for a player to hit their opponents, which may sometimes be accidental and at other times deliberate. And though not a part of the rules, an apology follows where a player usually raises their arm. This is considered as a sign of respect.
There are some instances where the player, who is hit, doesn't take too kindly to the apology. There may be various reactions to it such as ignoring the apology, lashing out at the player, complaining to the umpire, etc.
However, in a video recently uploaded on Reddit, a woman may have taken it too far with her reaction to being hit by a volley. During a mixed doubles match at a Redhawks court, a woman, who was at the net, was hit by a volley by a man who attacked from the net. The man immediately apologized for his volley but wasn't expecting what ensued.
In a fit of anger, the woman threw her racket at the man and started verbally abusing him. After a few abuses, she picked up her racket and threw it at the man again, who tried to dodge it. She then left the tennis court in anger, seemingly stating that 'she was done' as the three remaining players on the court looked confused at this sudden turn of events.
"I was aiming for the body of my opponent" - When tennis went wrong, ft. Stefanos Tsitsipas and Nick Kyrgios' Wimbledon 2022 R3, Rafael Nadal vs Novak Djokovic Montreal 2013 SF
Nick Kyrgios vs Stefanos Tsitsipas' third-round match at Wimbledon 2022 was full of controversy. The tennis clash had both players irked with their opponents.
Tsitsipas was seemingly trying to hit his shots at the Aussie during the match and also hit his ball in the crowd, an action which had Kyrgios wanting Tsitsipas to be defaulted for.
During the press conference after his defeat, Tsitsipas admitted that he was trying to hit Kyrgios and also said that he was frustrated with the Aussie during their encounter because of the latter's behavior.
"I was aiming for the body of my opponent but I missed by a lot. By a lot, like it is," Tsitsipas said. "There's frustration behind that for sure and I'm not used to play this way but I cannot just sit there, act like a robot and act like someone that is completely cold and ignorant."
During the 2013 Canadian Masters, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic were engaged in a thrilling tennis matchup. However, in the deciding set, a Djokovic dropshot saw Nadal responding with a backhand which hit Djokovic in his face. Though the Spaniard issued an apology immediately, the Serb ignored the apology and turned around. (at 11:15)
However, Nadal seemingly apologized to Djokovic again after the match ended during the ceremonious tennis handshake. The two players shook hands and embraced each other.
