Her victory at the 2018 US Open made her the first Japanese player to achieve that feat. She started by defeating Laura Siegemund in the first round, followed by wins over Julia Glushko and Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the second and third rounds. In the fourth round, Osaka defeated Belarusian star Aryna Sabalenka, in the only match where she dropped a set.

Moving on to the quarterfinals, she beat Lesia Tsurenko to advance to the semifinals, where she defeated Madison Keys. The final saw Osaka face Serena Williams and she won 6-2, 6-4 to win her maiden Grand Slam title.
