Naomi Osaka recently made headlines with her striking appearance in Nike’s edgy new commercial, "Dare to Hit Different". It features the Japanese showcasing her custom 'Goth Lolita' outfit for the 2024 US Open.
Osaka's recent collaboration with Nike and fashion designer Yoon Ahn is inspired by the Harajuku fashion style and features an array of bows, frills, ribbons, and tulle.
"The inspiration for me was definitely Japanese, like Harajuku. I remember one of the first times I went to Japan, I saw so many frills and so many bows," Naomi Osaka said (via The New York Times).
The outfit includes a bomber jacket with a large bow on the back, along with more bows attached to the back of the outfit and tiny ones on the shoes. For the day sessions, Osaka will don a green kit, and for the evening matches, a black one. Both kits feature small bows on her ruffled and tiered skirt, along with a white waistband.
The commercial featuring Osaka and her custom outfit was posted on the official Nike Women Instagram account on Sunday, August 25. It shows the four-time Major champion entering a court with a few women sitting on the benches. She went on to hit a ball so hard that it went through the territorial net, and stunned the others.

"I feel a little like Black Panther" - Naomi Osaka on her outfit
In a recent interview with the New York Times, Naomi Osaka revealed her sentiments about her outfit, expressing that it evokes in her the persona of “Black Panther” from the Marvel cinematic universe.
"For me, black is strength. For me, that's the super-suit color. I feel a little bit like Black Panther," Osaka said.
Furthermore, Osaka conveyed her eager anticipation to sport the tennis-ball-green ensemble.
"I really like the color green. I feel like it gives me peace and serenity. I think colors give you power. In a way, it’s a little intimidating to my opponent. Especially with this outfit. It’s so big, maybe it’ll create a bigger presence," she added.
Osaka won the US Open in 2018 and 2020, becoming the first Japanese player, male or female, to win a Grand Slam. The World No. 88 is set to face 10th seed Jelena Ostapenko in the first round of the 2024 New York Major on August 27.
