Novak Djokovic exchanged words with Nick Kyrgios and Carlos Alcaraz backstage at Rod Laver Arena during Day 2 of the ongoing Australian Open championships. The trio played their Round 1 matches on Day 2 with contrasting results.

Alcaraz had a relatively easier route to the Round of 64, outclassing his Kazakh opponent Alexander Shevchenko 6-1, 7-5, 6-1. Djokovic faced a sterner test against 19-year-old American Nishesh Basavareddy. Despite dropping the first set to his inspired opponent, Djokovic held on in the next three, emerging victorious 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

The returning Nick Kryrgios, however, was bundled out by unheralded Brit Jacob Fearnley in straight sets 7-6(3), 6-3, 7-6(2).

The clip, shared by Eurosport on its official X page, shows Djokovic interacting with both Kyrgios and Alcaraz while they passed him outside the arena. The Serb shook hands and had a brief exchange with Kyrgios. Notably, Djokovic and Kyrgios share a good rapport and had teamed up recently for doubles at the Brisbane International ATP tournament.

The Serb next met Carlos Alcaraz, who was also passing by. The duo, who have a fierce ongoing rivalry, had a warm exchange. Djokovic narrowly edges the head-to-head and won their last encounter at the Paris Olympics last year.

Eurosport in its caption described the exchanges as a "meeting of the greats."

Ten-time champion Djokovic and Alcaraz have been placed on the same side of the draw and could meet in a blockbuster Australian Open quarterfinal. Jannik Sinner, the defending champion and World No 1, has been placed in the other half.

Nick Kyrgios has hinted at retirement following singles loss at Australian Open

Following his shocking loss, Nick Kyrgios has said that he is unlikely to play another singles match at his home Slam. Speaking at the press conference, he said:

"I mean, realistically can't really see myself probably playing singles again here, so. Yeah, it was special. Like taking that in, it was pretty good. was good, yeah. So yeah, I mean, look, knew that have doubles, so kind of was taking everything in tonight in those moments. It was, yeah, nuts."

Nick Kyrgios also admitted that he was "hurting physically" during his match. After a recent loss to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard at the Brisbane International, Kyrgios revealed that his wrist had been bothering him. The former Wimbledon finalist has missed much of the past two years due to injury. His best result in Australia came in 2015 when he made it to the quarters.
