Novak Djokovic fell to the ground to celebrate his maiden Olympic final after defeating Lorenzo Mussetti in the semifinals. Djokovic ousted the Italian in straight sets to become the oldest man (37 years old) in history to reach the final of men's singles.
Djokovic, who has been chasing the elusive gold for years, entered the 2024 Paris Olympics as the top seed after World No. 1 Jannik Sinner's withdrawal. The Olympics are being held at Roland Garros on clay.
The 24-time Major champion kicked off his quest for gold by decimating Australia's Matthew Ebden. He then faced his long-time rival Rafael Nadal, in what was their 60th meeting and managed to oust the Spaniard comfortably. He continued his scintillating form against Germnay's Dominik Koepfer and followed it up by beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, Djokovic faced Italy's Lorenzo Mussetti, who he also faced in the semifinals of the 2024 Wimbledon championships as well. Though there were some hiccups at the beginning of the second set, the World No. 2 managed to defeat the Italian 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 49 minutes to reach the Olympic final for the first time in his career.
After winning the match, Djokovic collapsed to the ground for a few moments to celebrate his maiden final before shaking hands with Mussetti and the chair umpire.
Novak Djokovic will face Carlos Alcaraz in a rematch of Wimbledon 2024 title clash in the Paris Olympics final
Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz faced each other in the final of the 2024 Wimbledon Championships where the Spaniard successfully defended his title in straight sets. This match itself was a rematch of the 2023 final where Alcaraz clinched the title in a topsy-turvy five-setter.
While Djokovic became the oldest man to reach the final of men's singles at the Olympics, the 21-year-old Alcaraz has become the youngest man since Robert LeRoy in 1904 to achieve the same feat. He could also become the youngest man in history to win gold if he triumphs over the 37-year-old.
The two men have faced each other six times in their careers so far with their head-to-head tied at 3-3. However, their only meeting at Roland Garros, which came in 2023 in the semifinals, was won by the Serb in four sets.
