Novak Djokovic received a huge roar from the Serbians on his homecoming after clinching the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Serb defeated Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets in a thrilling two-hour and 51-minute match to achieve his dream.
The Serb's Olympic dream was in jeopardy after he sustained a medial meniscus tear in his right knee at the French Open. However, he underwent surgery and came back better than before, reaching the final of Wimbledon where he lost to Alcaraz in straight sets.
The 37-year-old was off to a flier at the Games this year, decimating Matthew Ebden 6-0, 6-1 in the opening round. He then defeated his longtime rival Rafael Nadal following which he defeated Dominik Koepfer and Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach the final 4. After some trouble in the second set of the semifinal, the Serb ousted Lorenzo Musseti to reach his maiden Olympic final.
The 24-time Major champion defeated Carlos Alcaraz 7-6(3), 7-6(2) to become the oldest man to win the gold medal in singles and clinch the career Golden Slam (Winning all the Majors and the Olympic gold at least once).
Djokovic was recently given a hero's welcome in front of his fans in Serbia. After a huge announcement by the anchor, he walked out at Belgrade's Old Palace with thousands of fans chanting 'Nole.' He kissed his gold medal and raised it as the fans continued cheering him on.
The Serb also posted some highlights from his 'golden' homecoming on X (formerly Twitter), where he can be seen appearing in front of the crowd as they continue to cheer him on. The World No. 2 can also be seen celebrating with fellow Olympic medalists, including Nikola Jokic, and also singing the Serbian National Anthem alongside his compatriots.
"A golden homecoming. KOD KUĆE JE NAJLEPŠE 🇷🇸❤️🥇," the 37-year-old wrote.
