Novak Djokovic faced Australian player Matthew Edben in the first round of the men's singles at the Paris Olympics. The Serb swept through Edben in 54 minutes to register a dominant victory with scores of 6-0, 6-1.
During the contest, Edben found himself on a 10-game losing streak, before finally winning his first game during the second set of the match. The Australian won the crowd over with his celebration as he put his shirt over his head and received a standing ovation from the fans.
Ebden has had a remarkable doubles career, winning 3 Grand Slam titles. He emerged as the winner in men's doubles at the 2022 Wimbledon and 2024 Australian Open. He also won the 2013 Australian Open in mixed doubles along with Jarmila Wolfe.
Matthew Ebden was well aware of the fact that he was facing one of the all-time greats of the game and had a humungous task ahead. The Australian was no match for Djokovic as the Serb stormed through the first round in under an hour.
Novak Djokovic poised to collide with Rafael Nadal in the 2nd Round at the Paris Olympics
With this win, Novak Djokovic advances to the second round of the Paris Olympics, and is on course to face 22-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal, should the Spaniard win his first-round contest.
Nadal will be taking on Marton Fucsovis in the first-round. The Spaniard has won the French Open on a record 14 occasions, giving him the title of 'King of Clay'. Rafa will be entering the game as the clear favorite over the 83rd ranked Fucsovis.
A win for the Nadal would set up a mouth-watering clash against Djokovic. In their 59 encounters so far, Djokovic holds a slight edge over Nadal with a record of 30-29. However, on clay, Nadal has been extremely dominant over the Serb beating him on eight occasions out of 10.
Their last meeting was in the Quarter-finals of the 2022 French Open, where Nadal beat Djokovic in a four-set thriller. The Spaniard went on to win the title for the 14th time, extending his record-breaking run on clay.
