Novak Djokovic treated fans at the 2025 Australian Open on Tuesday (January 21) to an unreal performance, stunning them with his unreal athleticism in the quarterfinal vs Carlos Alcaraz. The Serb, considered by many as the underdog against the World No. 3, proved once again why he is not to be written off.
At Rod Laver Arena under the lights, Alcaraz started off strong, taking the opening set 6-4. Just when it looked like the Spaniard would run away with the win, Djokovic turned the tide to take the second 6-4.
In the third set, the World No. 7 took the early lead, breaking to go 4-2 up. However, Alcaraz broke back and got back on serve, only for the Serb to break once again for a 5-3 lead. Next, serving for the set at 40-30, Djokovic produced one of the points of the match.
After rushing to the net to save a drop shot from Alcaraz, he somehow managed to reach the next lob, twisting his body to put the ball back in play with a high lob of his own. The third seed, not expecting the return perhaps, opted for a safe shot to the middle of the court instead of an overhead smash. Djokovic, predicting that move, was right in position to take the attack to the Spaniard from there, and closed out the point to seal the set 6-3.
Uncharacteristically quiet until then, the Serb celebrated the point by putting his fingers to his ears and telling the Australian Open crowd to make some noise -- a gesture that was met with raucous response from the Melbourne faithful.
Novak Djokovic beats Carlos Alcaraz in Australian Open QF
After taking the third set, Novak Djokovic sealed victory over Carlos Alcaraz in the next set to seal victory in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Australian Open. Although Alcaraz tried his best to take the match to the fifth set with a strong fightback in the fourth, it was ultimately not enough, as the Serb took it 6-3 with one break of serve.
In the semifinals next, the 24-time Grand Slam champion will face off against World No. 2 Alexander Zverev. The German needed four sets to win his quarterfinal clash in Melbourne as well, where he got past American Tommy Paul to fix an appointment with the Serb.
