Paula Badosa celebrated with boyfriend Stefanos Tsitsipas as she pulled off a dramatic victory against Daria Kasatkina in the third round of the ogoing Wimbledon Championships. The Spaniard won 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-4 to set up a fourth-round match against Donna Vekic.
Badosa won a close first set, edging into the tiebreak. The Spaniard started the second set strong by breaking Kasatkina's serve in the first game, but the Russian fought hard to break back and eventually took the second set 6-4 to level the match.
With everything to play for in the third set, both kept their best foot forward. Badosa found herself in trouble as Kasatkina broke her serve to lead 4-2. The Spaniard showed great resolve to win four straight games to win the match and reach the fourth round.
Badosa's boyfriend, Stefanos Tsitsipas was proud of her victory, as he shared a video of the two of them sharing a warm embrace after the match.
Tsitsipas wrote:
"Proud of you @paulabadosa 🫶."
Badosa replied with a heartwarming message:
Stronger together. Always.
Tsitsipas also wished the former World No. 2 the best of luck before the game. The Greek was asked by the ATP Tour social media team to send wishes to a fellow player, and he wished for Badosa to have a good tournament.
"I wish Paula Badosa good luck and to win competition. Just all positives to kind of align together, to go all the way until the end," he said.
Paula Badosa emotional after reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon 2024
Paula Badosa has had to fight through injury concerns in the past couple of months. She missed most of the 2023 season due to a stress fracture. The Spaniard made a comeback at the 2024 Adelaide International, but it has not been smooth sailing for her as she has had to retire mid-matches on many occasions this year.
Defying these setbacks, Badosa stormed into the fourth round of Wimbledon 2024 and was overwhelmed with emotions in the on-court interview. She said that reaching the second week was special for her because of the air of uncertainty surrounding her tennis career just a few months prior.
"And for me it’s very special. I mean I know it’s not my first time in a second week of a Slam but I think this is the most special one because a few months ago I didn’t know if I could be able to play tennis anymore. So being here today is special. I will be so embarrassed of this [interview] after but it’s okay," Badosa said.
Paula Badosa defeated Karolina Muchova and Brenda Fruhvirtova in the first and second rounds before defeating Kasatkina in the third round at Wimbledon 2024.
