Rafael Nadal will clash with Bjorn Borg's son Leo Borg in the opening round of the 2024 Nordea Open in Bastad on Monday, July 15. This will be the first outing of the Spaniard after his first-round exit at the 2024 French Open against Alexander Zverev. The 22-time Grand Slam champion strategically skipped the grass season prioritizing the 2024 Paris Olympics that will be held on clay courts.

The 21-year-old Swiss national is the son of 11-time Grand Slam champion, Bjorn Borg. Both players are wildcard entries at the Nordea Open. They also practiced with each other before the draw was announced.

A fan shared a clip on X where the officials can be seen revealing the draw in front of the media with the coveted trophy placed next to them. There were audible gasps from the crowd in the clip when Nadal's opening-round opponent's name was announced.

Bjorn Borg has won 6 out of his 11 Grand Slam trophies at the French Open before hanging up his racquet in 1981. He is superseded only by 8-time French Open champion Max Decugis, and 14-time French Open champion, Rafael Nadal.

Nadal will make a grand return to Bastaad after a 19-year hiatus. His last appearance at the ATP 250 event was a title-winning run in 2005.

Ruud will also be competing in the singles format of the game. Ruud shares a good rapport with Nadal having trained at the Rafa Nadal Academy in 2018.

Interestingly, the duo's head-to-head stands at 2-0 in Nadal's favor. He first defeated Ruud in the finals of the 2022 French Open to lift his record-extending 14th Roland Garros trophy. The former World No. 1 later defeated Ruud in the round-robin stage at the 2022 ATP Finals.

The tournament provides a good build-up for Nadal, who will play both singles and doubles at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He will partner with compatriot and World No. 3, Carlos Alcaraz at the Games.
