"It was my dream" - Santiago Gonzalez after winning Miami Open 2023 doubles title with Edouard Roger-Vasselin
On Saturday, April 1, both Santiago Gonzalez and Edouard Roger-Vasselin lifted their first ATP Masters 1000 trophy as a team in Miami. This was a significant achievement for both players, as it marked Roger-Vasselin's second title at this level and Gonzalez's first.
During the post-match press conference, Gonzalez gave his thoughts on the win. The victory held significant meaning for him as it coincided with his son Matias' birthday, making it an even more memorable occasion.
“It was my dream, of course. Lifting this kind of title, a Masters 1000. I’m 40 years old, I didn’t have one, this is my first. I’m glad [it’s] today. Today is my son’s birthday, so I’m going to remember this day for the rest of my life and I’m very happy,” Santiago Gonzalez told ATPTour.com.
In 2022, Gonzalez and Roger-Vasselin only teamed up on occasion. However, at the beginning of 2023, they decided to join forces on a permanent basis.
The duo's partnership proved to be successful as they secured their first title as a team in February in Marseille. Their momentum continued as they advanced to the semi-finals of the 2023 Indian Wells.
When questioned about their partnership during the post-match press conference, Roger-Vasselin made a humorous remark that their success could be attributed to their shared love for golf.
“It’s thanks to the golf. We are playing golf together… That’s the highlight of the week,” joked Roger-Vasselin. “But on the court, we fight from the first to the last ball, and we did pretty well for the last month. I’m really happy to lift another trophy. It’s my second Masters 1000, but for sure it’s always good to have a trophy like that.”
Santiago Gonzalez also made history by becoming the first Mexican finalist in Miami Open history.
