Taylor Fritz will take on World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the US Open final on Sunday, September 8. A clip of the American's girlfriend calling the Italian "cute" on the Netflix docuseries "Break Point" has resurfaced before their highly-anticipated clash.
Fritz booked his place in a Grand Slam final for the very first time in his career by beating 20th-seeded compatriot Frances Tiafoe 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in a semifinal that lasted three hours and 21 minutes. He became the first American male player to reach a Major final since Andy Roddick in Wimbledon 2009.
Jannik Sinner stands between the 26-year-old and the US Open trophy. The Italian booked his place in the final of the New York Major with a 7-5, 7-6(3), 6-2 win over Jack Draper.
Before Sunday's clash, a clip of Taylor Fritz's girlfriend Morgan Riddle calling Jannik Sinner "cute" has resurfaced on social media. The 26-year-old featured in the second season of Netflix's tennis docuseries "Break Point". During the third episode, Fritz was having a conversation with his girlfriend before his quarterfinal against Sinner at the 2023 edition of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
Morgan Riddle asked the then-World No. 5 about the Italian's form, to which he replied:
"I mean, I think he's been playing good all year."
Riddle then teased Fritz by saying:
"I think it'll be a fun match. He's fun to watch. He's so cute."
The 2022 Indian Wells champion then laughed and said:
"God"
Taylor Fritz: "I've always enjoyed playing Jannik Sinner"
Taylor Fritz spoke about facing Jannik Sinner in the US Open final, claiming that he always enjoyed played the Italian. The 26-year-old said that he had a feeling he would play well and come out on top.
“I've always enjoyed playing him. To be honest, I don't think that I'm going to be put in a more stressful situation than I was today than playing in a final. I think today was much more stressful for me than playing the final. I just feel good," Fritz said as quoted by ATP.
“I have a feeling I'm going to come out and play really well and win. When I play good tennis, I think that level is good enough to win," he added.
Fritz and Sinner have faced one another twice previously, with their head-to-head currently tied at 1-1. The first meeting between the two came in the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open in 2021, with the American winning 6-4, 6-3. However, Sinner beat Fritz 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in their most recent encounter, which came in the quarterfinals of the Masters 1000 event in 2023.
Victory for Jannik Sinner will see him win his second Grand Slam while Fritz will become the first American male to win a singles Major since Andy Roddick's triumph at US Open 2023.
