Tennis couple Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina recently melted hearts with a sweet moment following their 2025 Australian Open fourth-round qualification. Monfils and Svitolina, the only married couple on the professional tennis tour, tied the knot in July 2021. They have a daughter, Skai, who was born in October 2022.

Both players entered the Australian Open through the main draw. Monfils, currently ranked No. 41 on the ATP Tour, and Svitolina ranked No. 27 on the WTA Tour, have each qualified for the fourth round. Earlier in the day, Monfils faced Taylor Fritz and secured a hard-fought victory, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(1), 6-4. Meanwhile, Svitolina eliminated fourth seed Jasmine Paolini with a stunning comeback, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0, to reach the fourth round.

After Svitolina’s match, she was visibly exhausted from the clash as she walked through the tunnel. Monfils met her there, embraced her warmly, and helped her with her bag.

She has now equaled her performance from last season, where she reached the fourth round but was forced to retire due to an injury. Elina Svitolina’s best performances at the Australian Open came in 2018 and 2019, where she reached consecutive quarterfinals.

Gael Monfils to face Ben Shelton, Elina Svitolina set to clash with Veronika Kudermetova in Australian Open fourth round

Gael Monfils is competing in the Australian Open for the 19th time in his career and secured a spot in the fourth round after his victory over Taylor Fritz on Saturday. He will now face Ben Shelton on Monday (Jan. 20). This marks Shelton’s third Australian Open since turning pro and the first-ever meeting between Monfils and Shelton on the ATP Tour.

In the first round, Monfils began his Australian Open campaign with a five-set thriller against compatriot Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. In the second round, he beat Daniel Altmaier to progress.

His next opponent, Ben Shelton, started the tournament with a win over Brandon Nakashima in the first round, followed by victories against Pablo Carreño Busta in the second round and Lorenzo Musetti in the third.

On the WTA side, Elina Svitolina is set to face Veronika Kudermetova in the fourth round on Monday. So far in the tournament, Svitolina has defeated Sorana Cîrstea, Caroline Dolehide and Jasmine Paolini. Kudermetova, on the other hand, has secured wins against Olivia Gadecki, Katie Boulter and Beatriz Haddad Maia. Svitolina and Kudermetova have faced each other twice, with the latter emerging victorious on both occasions.
