Novak Djokovic isn’t letting the negative result of his special exemption appeal to enter the US get to him. The Serb is making the most of his break and was recently seen enjoying a concert in his hometown of Belgrade.
With travel restrictions still in place for unvaccinated foreigners wishing to enter the United States, Djokovic had applied for a special exemption to compete in the Sunshine Double in Indian Wells and Miami. However, since his appeal was rejected, the World No. 1 was forced to pull out of the first tournament and return to his home country after his semifinal loss to Daniil Medvedev at the 2023 Dubai Tennis Championships.
On March 8, fans of the 35-year-old spotted him with his wife Jelena and the rest of his family in Belgrade, at a concert by pop rock band Crvena jabuka. Soon enough, the whole venue was filled with chants of “Nole” to honor the tennis legend.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion promptly waved to his fans and gestured a ‘thank you’ for their undying support.
"Mr. President – lift your restrictions and let him compete" – Florida Governor fights for Novak Djokovic's inclusion at Miami Open 2023 after Indian Wells disappointment
Novak Djokovic received a disappointing update regarding his exemption appeal ahead of the 2023 Indian Wells Masters. Nonetheless, despite Indian Wells ending up being a lost cause, the World No. 1 might still have some hope of participating at the Miami Open.
Recently, the Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, called out POTUS Joe Biden for restricting the Serb based on the US Government’s “misguided and unscientific” vaccine mandate for foreigners.
“The only thing keeping Novak Djokovic from participating in the Miami Open tennis tournament is President Biden’s misguided and unscientific COVID-19 vaccination requirement for foreigner travelers,” Ron DeSantis wrote in a tweet.
He sternly urged the president to relax the restrictions ahead of the Miami Open, which will be contested between March 19- April 2.
“Mr. President – lift your restrictions and let him compete,” he added.
The Governor also made public his strongly worded letter to Joe Biden, asking him to reconsider the six-time Miami Open champion’s exemption appeal.
The Miami Open organizers sided with the Serb as well in a statement posted on social media.
“Novak Djokovic is one of the greatest tennis players of all time and a six-time champion of the Miami Open. We hope he is allowed entry into the country so Floridians have the opportunity to see him compete once again,” the Miami Open stated.
