With the 2024 Hamburg European Open currently underway, a video of Rafael Nadal suffering from cramps during the trophy presentation ceremony of the 2015 edition has resurfaced. The 2024 edition of the Hamburg Open kicked off on Monday, but the Spaniard didn't participate this year as he opted to feature in the Swedish Open.
The Spaniard won the title in the 2015 edition of the Hamburg European Open by defeating Italy's Fabio Fognini in the final, 7-5, 7-5. During the post-match ceremony, when Nadal was called upon to speak, he began by thanking the sponsors, organizers, and fans. In the middle of his speech, he exclaimed that he was cramping. A physiotherapist quickly ran toward him and massaged his leg. Nadal then hurriedly continued his speech, bending one leg while standing on the other.
“I want to say thanks to all the sponsors who made possible this event. I am cramping (he exclaimed). Okay, we continue like this (after bending his right leg). It's not a joke!, by the way it just have been a very important week for me and I hope to see you soon again. I don't know what to do now but thank you very much, everybody,” he said.

A brief look at Rafael Nadal's Hamburg European Open record

Rafael Nadal has won the Hamburg European Open twice during his career. He won the title in 2008 when it was an ATP Masters 1000 tournament and in 2015 after it was downgraded to an ATP 500 tournament.
At the 2008 edition, the Spaniard came in as the second seed and received a bye in the first round, kicking off the tournament by defeating Potito Starace in the second round. Nadal then had a straight-set victory over Andy Murray in the third round. Advancing to the quarterfinals, he beat his compatriot Carlos Moya and overcame Serbia's Novak Djokovic in the semifinal. The 2008 Hamburg European Open final was a repeat of the 2007 final, where Roger Federer came out victorious, but this time, he got his revenge by defeating the Swiss 7-5, 6-7(3), 6-3.
At the 2015 edition, he came in as the top seed and defeated Fernando Verdasco and Jiří Veselý in the first and second rounds. In the quarterfinals, he beat Pablo Cuevas to set up a semifinal clash with Andreas Seppi, whom he also defeated. The former World No.1 won his second title at the Hamburg European Open by defeating Fabio Fognini in the final.
Nadal and Nikoloz Basilashvili are the only active players on the ATP tour to have won the title twice.
