The world's very best players from the WTA Tour will begin their quest to win the Australian Open 2025 from January 12. With a 128-player field, it can be quite difficult to get a clear idea of who could be the last woman standing. However, the uncertainty on the women's tour has given way to consistency due to the results of a few top players.
We asked AI to take a shot at predicting the women's singles winner. Both ChatGPT and Google's Gemini backed top players such as Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, and Iga Swiatek, among others. While both artificial systems made logical choices, their reasoning was riddled with a few errors.
Gemini had Sabalenka as the top pick. While it correctly stated that she's gunning for her third Australian Open crown, and won the US Open last year, it also added that she was the runner-up at Wimbledon last year, when she didn't even compete.
It next picked Swiatek, and didn't make factual errors while backing her. Gauff was next on the list, and it incorrectly stated that she's gunning to win her first Grand Slam title. A victory in Melbourne will be her second Major title following her triumph at the US Open 2023.
Gemini also had Elena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula, and Emma Navarro among its title contenders, and didn't make any errors while making a case for them. Aside from Gauff, Swiatek, and Sabalenka, ChatGPT had Ons Jabeur in the mix, along with the Williams sisters.
Serena Williams retired in 2022, and Venus Williams is inactive at the moment. Regardless of the errors, the top-three ranked women on the tour are the strong favorites based on their results.
Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, and Iga Swiatek looking to continue their monopoly on Majors at the Australian Open
Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, and Coco Gauff are not only the tour's top three ranked players but also account for six of the last eight Majors. The Belarusian won the Australian Open and the US Open last year, and claimed the title in Melbourne in 2023 as well.
Swiatek won the French Open the last two years, and Gauff won the US Open 2023. Wimbledon is the only Major to escape their clutches. The three are in good form this year as well. Sabalenka started the year with a title at the Brisbane International, and improved her record to 27-1 in Australia.
Gauff won the United Cup, and remained unbeaten in all five of her singles matches. Swiatek also participated in the tournament, and lost only to Gauff in the final. Thus, it's not surprising to have the trio as the top picks to win the Australian Open 2025.
