Defending champion Jannik Sinner and 21st seed Ben Shelton will clash in the semifinals of the Australian Open 2025 on Friday, January 24. The Italian fought past players such as Holger Rune and Alex de Minaur to book his place in the semifinals, while the American outplayed the likes of Gael Monfils and Lorenzo Musetti.

Sinner is aiming to reach his third Major final, while Shelton is seeking to reach the summit clash of a Major for the first time. The latter is in the second Major semifinal of his career, and his first at the Australian Open. As the two look ready to duke it out for a spot in the final, we asked AI its opinion on who could come out on top in this clash.

Google's Gemini AI chose Sinner as the winner of this semifinal. The reasons being his current form, especially on hardcourts, and also his 4-1 winning record over Shelton. The Italian's precise and consistent shotmaking also gives him the edge over his opponent's more aggressive brand of tennis. However, the American's style of play could also work in his favor.

Shelton made a fantastic start to his rivalry with Sinner, and staged a comeback from a set down to beat him in their very first encounter at the Shanghai Masters 2023. However, he has since lost all of their four matches in straight sets, with their most recent meeting taking place at last year's Shanghai Masters. He will now aim to snap his losing skid against the Italian.

American women have consistently won Major titles, even after the dominance of Serena Williams faded and her eventual retirement. Since the legend won her last Major title at the Australian Open 2017, Sloane Stephens, Sofia Kenin, and Coco Gauff have captured Major titles. However, the men have struggled to do the same, and Andy Roddick's US Open 2003 triumph remains the last time a man from the USA tasted Grand Slam glory.

Taylor Fritz reached the final of the US Open last year, and went down to Jannik Sinner in straight sets. Ben Shelton will now aim to dethrone the Italian and advance to his maiden Major final. Andre Agassi's victory at the Australian Open 2003 remains the last time an American man won the title Down Under as well as reached the final.

With the weight of history on his shoulders, Shelton will need to play the best match of his life to outplay the in-form Sinner. The Italian has a 58-3 record on hardcourts since the start of 2024, with two of his three losses coming at the hands of Carlos Alcaraz, and Andrey Rublev was responsible for his other loss.
