Emma Raducanu has made a major statement about Iga Swiatek’s doping test row. Addressing the case for the first time, the Brit shared how all tennis players worry about the consequences of “contamination.”

Swiatek was recently handed a one-month suspension after testing positive for low traces of trimetazidine (TMZ) in August. The five-time Grand Slam champion proved that the banned substance entered her system through a contaminated batch of melatonin pills, which she ingested to regulate her sleep and stress levels.

The case came to light on November 28, when the ITIA (International Tennis Integrity Agency) issued a “no significant fault or negligence” verdict. Iga Swiatek has since served her one-month suspension—from September 12 to October 4 during the investigation and from November 28 to December 4 after the verdict was reached.

The Pole’s colleague, Emma Raducanu, recently shed light on how players have to be alert at all times, considering how easy it could be to fail a test due to contamination. Speaking to the Telegraph, she said:

"Not just me, but a lot of the players I know, we’re quite apprehensive. Everything we take, we are very aware of the situation and how easily things can be contaminated."
"And there are certain supplements that I may want to take, but I can’t take them because they’re over the counter and they’re not batch-tested," the 2021 US Open champion continued.

In regard to Iga Swiatek’s case, Emma Raducanu also claimed that it could cost a fortune for players to carry out a batch test before they consume the required medicines and supplements.

"To batch-test something, it costs a grand for one little thing, so it’s very expensive," she said in the aforementioned interview.
"For the things that you really, really need to take, then it’s obviously worth that. But you just have to cut out a lot of things that you wouldn’t necessarily take," she added.

Raducanu uncovered just how careful the players have to be with what they ingest, taking extreme measures in the process.

"I’m very careful with what I drink, what I eat," she said. "If I leave my water around, I’m very on edge about it. But it’s just part of the sport. We’re all in the same boat."

After serving her suspension, Iga Swiatek is set to make a return at the World Tennis League exhibition event in Abu Dhabi (December 19-22), before kicking off her 2025 journey at the United Cup. Meanwhile, Emma Raducanu is expected to launch her campaign at the ASB Classic in Auckland.
