"We want our kids to live better lives" - Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian lays bare pledge he's made for daughters Olympia and Adira

Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian recently spoke about the internet's potential and Reddit's crackdown on hate speech. The American, who co-founded the social networking site in 2005, is admittedly intent on doing content-related work that would make his children proud.

Ohanian stepped down from Reddit's board of directors in June 2020 amid widespread protests against police brutality over George Floyd's death. At the time of his resignation, the businessman expressed a desire for "more diversity at the highest level" and implored the company to replace his seat on the board with a Black candidate.

Ohanian recently made an appearance on Jay Shetty's podcast 'On Purpose with Jay Shetty', where he talked about a variety of topics. The 41-year-old hoped that his children, Olympia and Adira River, would understand his efforts to make the internet a hate-free platform.

"I still think the internet can bring out the best in us, I do. I can also accept the conflicting view that it enables the worst of us. And I obviously want to be on the side of the former. So, I try to use my platform the best," Ohanian told Jay Shetty. "I think I have to remain an optimist because I'm still optimistic about humanity and these tools are just a reflection of society.

"And I need to believe that there is hope for us to figure it out. At the end of the day, we all want to live decent lives, we want our kids to live possibly better lives. I want to spend my years supporting all this stuff that my girls will be proud of."

During the conversation, Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian also talked about how his resignation finally prompted Reddit to update its policy on hate.

"It comes around communities built explicitly on racism, which I knew were bad for business, bad for society," Alexis Ohanian said. "When I did part my ways, I was so pleased to see the response that, 'Finally, we're going to ban these things.' Because it shines a light, right?"

"What it also taught me was, that was four years ago, that I didn't have enough agency, which was my own doing," he added. "But I was never going to put myself in a situation again where I couldn't be doing not just the work of my career, but also the way it aligned with my values."

Alexis Ohanian married Serena Williams in November 2017 after more than two years of dating. They have two children - Olympia (7) and their baby daughter Adira River, who was born last August.
