Novak Djokovic congratulated Jannik Sinner after the latter reached the summit of the ATP rankings for the first time in his career. Along with Djokovic, the Italian also received heartwarming wishes from others in the tennis fraternity.
On Monday, June 10, Jannik Sinner made history after becoming the first Italian, male or female, to become the World No. 1 in tennis. He replaced the 24-time Grand Slam winner, Djokovic, at the top of the rankings. The Serb slipped to third place following his withdrawal from the just concluded 2024 French Open.
Sinner was recently given a special World No. 1 trophy by the Association of Tennis Players (ATP) for achieving the milestone. The 22-year-old took to Instagram to express his feelings after receiving the trophy. He posted pictures of himself with the trophy and also expressed gratitude to the ATP for the presentation.
"Thank you @atptour for today’s presentation, a lovely moment and I now look forward to start the grass court season," he wrote.
Novak Djokovic, who had been the World No. 1 for a record 428 weeks, congratulated Sinner for the achievement. The Serb commented on the Italian's Instagram post.
"Congratulations on well deserved top spot of the world of tennis," he wrote.
Along with Djokovic, other active players also congratulated the reigning Australian Open champion. Canada's Denis Shapovalov wrote "Congrats man!" on Sinner's post. The three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka also joined in by writing:

In a special video released by the ATP, the Swiss maestro, Roger Federer had some nice words to say for Sinner, the newly crowned World No. 1. The video also featured some other legends who have been at the top of the rankings during the course of their careers. Federer, who remained World No. 1 for a staggering 310 weeks, congratulated the 22-year-old. The 20-time Grand Slam champion said that reaching the top of the rankings for him is the ultimate achievement in tennis.
"Hey Jannik, many congratulations also from my side to become World No. 1. I think this is for me personally, maybe the ultimate achievement. And I'm sure you are incredibly happy and you should be so proud. I'm sure, also, Italy is loving you right now as they should being the first Italian player ever, to be World No. 1. It's incredible.
