TV presenter, Anne Diamond chastised Emma Raducanu on live TV for withdrawing from the mixed doubles event at Wimbledon with Andy Murray. Fans were unhappy with the remarks from Diamond and expressed their contempt.
Raducanu and Murray received a wildcard to participate in the mixed doubles event at SW19. Murray, who withdrew from the singles event due to a recent back surgery, lost in the first round of the men's doubles event on July 4 and received a farewell ceremony on Centre Court.
The 37-year-old was scheduled to grace Wimbledon one last time in the mixed doubles event. However, Raducanu withdrew from the event citing a stiff wrist. The 21-year-old, who was scheduled to play her singles fourth-round match the next day, has undergone surgeries for her wrists in the past and preferred to prioritize her fitness.
TV presenter Diamond was not on board with the justification and described Raducanu's actions as an 'unforgivable snub'. She claimed that she would not root for her anymore. The video of Diamond's remarks was posted on X by GBNews.
Fans slammed Diamond for her comments about Raducanu.
"What an absolute t*** Anne Diamond is... It’s Wimbledon, not the Andy Murray farewell tour," one fan wrote.
"Anne Diamond, the expert on tennis (not), trying to be relevant! Best laugh of the day!" another fan wrote.
"Come on Anne, she would have been really vilified if she went ahead and let the side down because she was unfit to play. You’re just vilifying her for the sake of it. Try being a bit more human," a third one wrote.
Here are a few more reactions to Diamond's comments.
"Anne Diamond. Miserable petulant old crone," one fan wrote.
"Who does Anne Diamond think she is to criticise emma, and Andy Murray is NOT the King of Wimbledon that title goes to a Swiss," another fan wrote.
"Anne Diamond another bitter old trout, she even looks like old trout Judy. Trust me if Anne was on centre court, it would be her facing the booing😂. Go away Anne you’re well past your sell by date," wrote yet another.
Carlos Alcaraz defended Emma Raducanu's decision to withdraw from Wimbledon mixed doubles with Andy Murray
Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon with a win over Ugo Humbert in the fourth round. During a press conference after his match, he was asked about his thoughts on Emma Raducanu's late withdrawal from mixed doubles at SW19 with Andy Murray.
"It’s a difficult situation. She said she was going to play mixed doubles with Andy in the last Wimbledon of his career. But obviously she's young. I’m sure she didn’t want to pull out of the mixed doubles. She had her reasons to do it," Carlos Alcaraz said.
The Spaniard defended Emma Raducanu's decision and claimed that it was a difficult scenario for everyone involved. He also mentioned that many other players would have done the same as the 2021 US Open winner did, had they been put in her situation.
