Several fans disapproved of Danielle Collins' recent comments regarding her 2024 Paris Olympics controversy with Iga Swiatek. Although the American admitted she could have handled the confrontation with Swiatek differently, fans highlighted a different aspect in their criticism.
Collins and Swiatek faced each other in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics. Swiatek comfortably claimed the first set, but Collins rallied in the second to even the match. During the decisive third set, however, a backhand from Collins struck Swiatek in the chest, causing her pain. Meanwhile, Collins was also affected by abdominal pain during the match.
The match ended early at 1-6, 6-2, 1-4 as Collins retired due to an abdominal injury. At the net, Collins appeared to confront the 23-year-old, leaving Swiatek visibly taken aback by her remarks.
At the press conference following the match, the American revealed that she told Swiatek not to be insincere about her abdominal injury. She also emphasized that she accepts people as they are and doesn’t need any pretense.
Months after the incident, speaking to the Athletic, Collins compared it to workplace friction, acknowledging she could have handled it better. The 30-year-old reiterated her commitment to self-improvement while recognizing her mistakes.
"I think what happened on the court is very much just like sometimes people have friction at work. For most people, it's not on the news. I'm trying to be the best person that I can be, but that's not to say that I don't fall short of that. I could have taken a different approach and done some things differently. But we had a moment there on court," she said.
Collins also noted that conflicts between men are often overlooked, while similar tensions with women are exaggerated and overanalyzed.
"She's not someone that I really get to see a lot at the tennis and she's very guarded with her group. We all make mistakes and fall short. And I'm just trying to put that behind me. I think when guys kind of get into a little tiff or a little bit of friction, I think that it's kind of expected. With women, it becomes this way bigger issue than it really needs to be. There's a lot of extrapolation," she added.
A fan on X later shared her quotes.
The fans, however, disapproved of Collins' statements asking her to apologise for her actions. A fan wrote:
"Huh? what a bullsh*t, just apologise!!! No wonder she is guarded when she has to deal with crap like this."
Another fan advised the former Australian Open finalist to remain silent if she couldn’t apologize to Swiatek.
"if she doesn't want to apologise she should at least stay silent 🤡," they said.
"wasting time reading this sh*t ofc she basically said nothing and won't apologize," a fan commented.
Here are a few more reactions from the fans:
"So she knows she was out of line and wants to put it behind her but it doesn’t seem like she apologized for it either bruh," a fan wrote.
"Trying to make it a thing about women like girl no you were just weird," another chimed in.
"It's sounds awfully like 'blah blah blah," a fan said.
