Fans reacted with strong disapproval to Nick Kyrgios' remarks about not wanting to retire in the same manner as tennis icons Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal. According to the Aussie, Murray and Nadal have not bowed out with "grace."
Murray retired after the Paris Olympics in August, having battled injuries and inconsistency for a while. Meanwhile, Nadal plans to retire after the Davis Cup Finals in the next few weeks following his own battle with injuries.
During his recent appearance in 'The Louis Theroux Podcast', Kyrgios expressed that he does not want to follow the retirement path of Murray and Nadal. He believes they seemingly struggled and endured pain toward the end of their careers.
"I look at how Andy Murray's doing it now, and how Rafa Nadal is going out, I don't want to be like that either. I don't want to be kind of crawling to the finish line in a sense,” Kyrgios said.
"You deserve to go out, I think, a little bit more gracefully than he's done," he added.
The 29-year-old's comments were posted on X and many fans expressed frustration over them, with some labeling his statements as attention-seeking and disrespectful toward the tennis legends.
"What a disgrace Kyrgios is. She [He] should just keep mum , the moment he speaks he utters absolute nonsense. Andy Murray, Rafa, Roger each one of them bowed out with amazing grace and dignity. It Kyrgios who didn’t play with dignity and still indulging in his attention seeking dirty tricks at the expense of legends of Tennis," one fan wrote.
"He’s a loser. Why would he need to “retire”? He could just stop talking and everyone would forget he exists," another fan wrote.
"Nick is trying really hard to be relevant in a sport where he isn't," a third fan wrote.
Here are some more fan reactions disapproving of Kyrgios' remarks.
"May somebody stop this motor-mouth? He is drooling on everything. Why talk about Andy Murray when Nick can't be Andy's 1000th portion? He talks nonsense most of the time. He only needs to focus on his tennis," one fan wrote.
"No one should be listening to tennis player failure Nick Kyrgios," another fan wrote.
"There is nothing but grace when one remembers Andy. Not the same can be said for Nick…" yet another fan wrote.
Nick Kyrgios attempted to postpone Rafael Nadal's retirement with a unique message
Rafael Nadal took to his social media accounts and posted an emotional video announcing that he would retire from tennis after playing in the Davis Cup Finals. Nick Kyrgios reacted to the post and wished the Spaniard the best for his future endeavors but also tried to postpone his retirement by posting:
"Rafa don’t retire I wanna play you 1 last time," Kyrgios wrote on X.
Nadal and Kyrgios faced each other nine times on the ATP Tour with the Spaniard leading the head-to-head 6-3. Nadal will represent Spain at the Davis Cup Finals in the quarterfinal against the Netherlands on November 19, in Malaga.
