Martina Navratilova lashed out at one of the lawyers of Gisele Pelicot's rapists after he was found berating women protesters in public with obscene language. The verdict for the highly documented case was finally released on Thursday in favor of Gisele.
The world was shaken when Gisele Pelicot's heartbreaking case came to light. After much investigation and trials, her ex-husband Dominique Pelicot was found guilty of crushing sleeping tablets and anti-anxiety medication into his ex-wife's meals and inviting men over to rape her for over nine years from 2011-2020. The couple tied the knot in April 1973.
Dominique and 50 other men were found guilty with Gisele's ex-husband being handed a 20-year sentence. Admitting to the charges, he said,
“I am a rapist.”
However, some concerning scenes emerged in the aftermath of the verdict as one of the rapists' lawyers was found berating women protestors. A user translated what the lawyer was saying from French to English on X (formerly Twitter),
"The lawyer of one of Gisele Pelicot’s rapists gets emotional outside the court, calling the female protesters 'hysterical', 'foul-mouthed' and 'sh*t'."
Martina Navratilova, who was disturbed by the lawyer's actions, took umbrage his actions.
"What a piece of sh*t this foul mouthed lawyer is," Navratilova tweeted.
"What an amazingly strong woman" - Martina Navratilova lauded Gisele Pelicot for standing up for herself despite being 'completely destroyed'
Ahead of the trial, Gisele Pelicot was given the option to keep her identity anonymous given the circumstances of the trial, however, she boldly demanded an open trial. Speaking on her reasons for making the trial public, she said,
"I want all women who have been raped to say: Madame Pelicot did it, I can too. I don't want them to be ashamed any longer."
Gisele also delivered a line that went on to become so popular, it caused people all over the world to dub her a hero.
“It's not for us to have shame - it's for them".
Martina Navratilova was no different, as she took to X (formerly Twitter) to applaud the 72-year-old Pelicot's strength.
When the NY Times published an article stating how Gisele Pelicot and her brave story had brought a revolution in France, Martina Navratilova shared the article on her X and marveled at Gisele's bravery.
"And for the better!!! What an amazingly strong woman!!!" Navratilova tweeted.
Navratilova is a huge advocate of women's rights and never shies away from expressing her opinions over sensitive situations that are causing women harm.
