World No.11 and former Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins announced her retirement after the Australian Open in January. However, things have not exactly gone to plan for Collins, as unseeded Australian player Olivia Gadecki ended her campaign in the first round at the Guadalajara Open. Previously, Collins had exited Flushing Meadows in the first round too, tasting defeat at the hands of Caroline Dolehide at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in three sets 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.
For the remainder of 2024, Collins is set to play in two WTA 1000 tournaments. First up for her is the China Open in Beijing which starts on 23 September, followed by the the Wuhan Open starting October 7.
Collins has a WTA career singles win-loss record of 265–151. She has won four singles titles in her career, along with one doubles title, and has won US$8,927,346 as prize money since turning pro in 2016.
Last year, she competed at the San Diego Open after the US Open, where she reached the semifinals, losing to Barbora Krejčíkováara 3-6. 7-5, 6-2. She had also competed at the Guadalajara Open last year where she retired in the Round of 64.
Speaking to ESPN before the 2024 French Open, Collins said,
"I want to go out playing on a high level, and I want people to remember me for the tennis I was playing. …This has been empowering in that I've been able to decide to retire on my terms and have the ability to choose."
Overall, her retirement season has been far away from a happy ending, and she will be looking to gain her form back for the final tournaments of the year and give her supporters much to cheer on during her last appearances on the court.
Some fans have shared doubts regarding her qualification for the WTA finals after her abrupt exit from the Guadalajara Open in Mexico.
Danielle Collins's underwhelming appearance at the Guadalajara Open
Despite coming in to Guadalajara with 39 tour wins and two titles this year, the World No.11 and second seed at the tournament, Danielle Collins, suffered a shock defeat to qualifier Olivia Gadecki. She lost in the first round of the WTA 500 event at the PanAmerican Tennis Centre in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. The milestone win for World No.152 Gadecki was far from a fairytale for Collins.
This was Collins' fourth straight defeat this season. Her previous exits were from Wimbledon in the Round of 16, from the Abierto GNP Seguros in the second round, and from Flushing Meadows in the opening round .
Collins' performance was far from her usual self, as she hit 35 unforced errors and served up eight double faults. The match lasted only 84 minutes. Collins has struggled on the court since her Olympic quarterfinal injury retirement against World No.1 Iga Swiatek.
Her performance was underwhelming as she only managed to win one breakpoint and struggled to consistently win games or break Gadecki's service. As Collins prepares for the China Open, Gadecki will face Martina Trevisan in the quarterfinals of the Guadalajara Open.
