Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz are looking to script history at the 2024 Wimbledon for different reasons. Both are the leading contenders to win the title and found out about their fates on Friday, June 28, when the draw for this year's edition of the tournament was revealed.
Djokovic and Alcaraz find themselves in opposing halves of the draw. As such, the two can only cross paths at the very end. The summit clash will take place on Sunday, July 11. Should they meet in the final, it will be a rematch of last year's showdown for the title.
Alcaraz pipped the Serb in five sets to capture his second Major title, and first at Wimbledon. The victory brought an end to the 37-year-old's reign at the venue, which had commenced in 2018.
Djokovic is seeded second at the 2024 Wimbledon and is in the bottom half of the draw. He will take on qualifier Vit Kopriva in the first round. Alcaraz is the third seed and is in the top half of the draw. He will face a qualifier in his opener as well and will begin his title defense against Mark Lajal.
Alcaraz kicked off his grass swing at the Cinch Championships following his triumph at the French Open. He was the defending champion there as well but was eliminated by Jack Draper in the second round.
As for the Serb, he has spent the last few weeks in recovery. An injury caused him to abandon his French Open campaign as he withdrew before his quarterfinal clash. He seems to be in good shape now and is raring to compete.
Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz haven't faced off even once this year
One of the sport's most enticing new rivalries has been on hold for a while. Alcaraz and Djokovic battled it out thrice last year but the two haven't even met once this year. Their previous meeting took place at the 2023 ATP Finals, which the Serb won in straight sets.
Djokovic currently leads their head-to-head 3-2. Alcaraz's last win in this match-up came a year ago in the Wimbledon final. He also came quite close to winning their next match but blew a championship point in the final of the Cincinnati Masters.
It has been more than six months since their last duel. Fans will have to wait another two weeks to see if the highly-anticipated showdown between these two comes to fruition at this year's Wimbledon.
