Iga Swiatek is dominating the WTA circuit with over 100 weeks at the helm since she first achieved the top spot in April 2022. A blog titled 'Swiatek, we have a problem', which states the Pole's dominance over her opponents as an issue, has caught the eye of the fans.
Swiatek recently lifted her fourth French Open title after getting the better of Jasmine Paolini in the final. The World No. 1 is now on a 21-match winning streak at Roland-Garros and a 19-match win streak since the Madrid Open began in April. The Pole is dominating her closest competitors in head-to-head records.
In a blog written by Fernando Murciego for Eurosport, he mentioned:
"What we have seen on this clay tour is insulting, practically no one competes with her, they are not even close, not even those who are closest to her in the classification."
Murciego claimed Martina Navratilova was in a similar situation in the 1980s. He mentioned that the emergence of players like Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis, and Monica Seles helped Navratilova gain more competition.
"Swiatek is still too young to take over, so we'll settle for seeing her suffer a little more, all in order not to lose the excitement in a sport," Murciego wrote further.
Fans were unhappy with the blog and what it mentioned. The blog title, 'Swiatek: We have a problem', might also have hit some nerves. Many claimed that Rafael Nadal's 14 French Open titles were not put in a similar light.
"Funny from Spanish media when Rafa won 14 of them lol what was the problem then?" one fan asked.
"Have you had similar concerns on Nadal? just asking... cause you know, 14 RG titles," another fan asked.
"Extremely disappointing article, could only come from a man's pen. Were the men's big 3 'a problem' as well?" a third fan asked.
Here are a few more reactions from tennis fans:
"Pathetic article," one fan wrote.
"The opponents are at a lower level atm. But this is the problem of the opponents, not Iga," another fan wrote.
"Iga Swiatek is not the problem. She is leading the women's tennis in a stunning way," a third fan wrote.
