Jannik Sinner's 'humble words' seemingly being glorified by tennis media have irked fans who felt that the Italian was being appreciated for merely stating the truth. The World No. 1 called his rivals Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, who competed for the gold medal, the "two best players" in the world.
After his doctor strongly advised him to skip the 2024 Paris Olympics due to tonsillitis, a disappointed Sinner spent time to recover fully. He is now ready to kick off his North American hardcourt swing, all set to defend his title at the Canadian Masters.
While speaking to the media ahead of the tournament, Jannik Sinner lauded the Paris Olympic final between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. The two men engaged in a grueling two-hour and 51-minute battle where the Serb prevailed 7-6(3), 7-6(2) to win the elusive gold.
Sinner appreciated the 'high level' of their encounter and also called the two men the best players in the world. He later described the match as special and said the quality was not something people often get to see. The 22-year-old also said that it was a pleasure to have watched the match.
"It was a very high level match, I think everyone agrees with that," Sinner said. "It was a very physical match. When two best players in the world, they face each other at the moment they are producing something very special."
Tennis Channel's page posted this clip on X (formerly Twitter) and called Jannik Sinner's words humble.
Fans were irked as they thought the Italian was only stating the truth and felt that the media was seemingly trying to glorify his words. One fan questioned where the humility was in Sinner's words.
"Humble words? Where is the humility in what he has said? Are you still going on with the nonsense of turning this man into Giovanni Veryhumble?"
Another fan was irked by tennis' apparent obsession with finding humility in players, and called it "overrated." They added that the idea of finding humility in players started during Roger Federer's time.
"Tennis is obsessed with the appearance of humility etc . Started since the Fed days as if the players at the top are not confident asf to get to where they have, to win the matches they have won. Humility is overrated."
Here are some other reactions from the fans.
"the bar is so low," a fan said.
"I saw the match," a fan wrote and added a GIF saying 'I'm humble'.
"So does that mean everyone who watched the match is humble???" a fan questioned.
"Sometimes he looks like a kid with no single emotion,” a fan quipped.

While Coric has won the only meeting between him and Martinez, Sinner boasts a 1-0 lead in head-to-head against the Spaniard as well as the Croat.
