Elena Rybakina's search for a new coach has come to an end more than two months after parting ways with long-time coach Stefano Vukov. She has now hired Goran Ivanisevic as her new coach, and the two will officially begin their partnership in the upcoming offseason. The information came to light during the media day prior to the WTA Finals 2024.
Ivanisevic was one of the most accomplished players of his time. He finished as the runner-up at Wimbledon thrice, and finally captured the title at the All England Club in 2001 in a fairytale conclusion to his career. He also peaked at No. 2 in the rankings, and won another 21 titles in addition to his only Major triumph.
Ivanisevic's resume as a coach is even more stacked compared to his achievements as a player. He worked with Marin Cilic from 2013 to 2016, and guided his compatriot to his maiden Major title at the US Open in 2014. This was followed by year-long stints with Tomas Berdych and Milos Raonic, with whom he tasted modest success.
Novak Djokovic teamed up with Ivanisevic in 2019, the latter's most high-profile assignment to date. The Serb won 30 titles under his tutelage, including nine Major titles. The two went their separate ways in March this year, after nearly five years of working together. The Croat will now aim to guide Rybakina to similar heights as his previous proteges.
Goran Ivanisevic's team up with Elena Rybakina marks his first collaboration with a WTA player
While all of Goran Ivanisevic's previous coaching gigs have been with notable players, working with Elena Rybakina would mark his first alliance with a WTA player. The Croat was noted for having an impressive serve during his heyday, so it came as no surprise when Novak Djokovic's serve also improved under him.
Rybakina is already one of the best servers on the tour. With Ivanisevic by her side, she has the potential to become unstoppable. She is currently ranked second when it comes to number of aces hit this year, fifth with respect to first serve points won, and sixth with regards to number of service games won.
Rybakina has maintained her position despite playing fewer matches compared to other top players. While her time with her former coach Vukov didn't come to an amicable end, she will hope that a fresh start with Ivanisevic will mark the start of a new era for her.
