Emma Raducanu will begin her 2025 season at the ASB Classic in Auckland, which starts on December 30, 2024. The Brit will be up against Robin Montgomery in the first round of the WTA 250 tournament.
Raducanu is seeded sixth at the 2025 ASB Classic. She has landed in the city and is gearing up for her third outing at the event. The World No. 57 failed to get past the second round of the ASB Classic in 2023 and 2024 and will aim for a better performance in 2025. In the first round, she will face American youngster Robin Montgomery.
World No. 117 Robin Montgomery is an up-and-coming player from the USA. She was born in 2004 in Washington, DC. In 2019, she won the prestigious junior competition, the Orange Bowl, and turned professional in 2020. That year, she made her senior Grand Slam debut at the US Open via wildcard and lost to Yulia Putintseva in the first round.
2021 was a big year for Montgomery as she won her first Grand Slam junior title. Seeded seventh at the 2021 US Open Girls' Singles main draw, the American defeated Annabelle Xu, Natalia Szabanin, top seed Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva, Solona Sierra, and Kristina Dmitruk en route to her maiden Grand Slam junior accolade.
Montgomery completed the doubles at the 2021 US Open Girls competition by winning the girls' doubles title alongside Ashlyn Krueger. The American duo defeated compatriots Reese Brantmeier and Elvina Kalieva in the title contest. The southpaw also holds three titles at the ITF level, with the most recent one coming at Saint-Gaudens, France, in May 2023.
In 2024, Montgomery achieved several career milestones. She recorded back-to-back wins at the WTA 1000 level for the first time in her career at the 2024 Madrid Open by defeating Elina Avanesyan and Katie Boulter.
Montgomery reached her first tour quarterfinal at the Libema Open in the Netherlands and continued her good form on the grass to record her maiden Grand Slam main draw win. At the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, the American defeated fellow qualifier Olivia Gadecki in the first round.
Emma Raducanu and Robin Montgomery have not faced each other on WTA Tour
The first-round clash at the 2025 ASB Classic will be the first WTA Tour meeting between Emma Raducanu and Robin Montgomery. While Montgomery featured regularly on the tour last year, she did not come up against Raducanu, who was out for most of the season due to injuries.
If Emma Raducanu beats Montgomery, she is projected to face Jule Niemeier in the second round, fourth-seeded Lulu Sun in the quarterfinals, top-seeded Madison Keys in the semifinals, and second-seeded Elise Mertens in the final. Naomi Osaka, Amanda Anisimova, and Sofia Kenin are the other star players competing in Auckland.
At the 2025 ASB Classic, Emma Raducanu will be eyeing her first title at any level since the 2021 US Open. The Brit has struggled with injuries since her triumph in New York and failed to play regularly on the tour. She has not made a WTA Tour final since the 2021 US Open.
