Frances Tiafoe's father is Constant Tiafoe while his mother's name is Alphina. The American has had a pretty good run so far at the US Open, having booked his place in the quarterfinals after a 6-4, 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-3 win over 28th seed Alexei Popyrin. He previously beat Aleksandar Kovacevic, Alexander Shevchenko and 13th seed Ben Shelton.
Tiafoe comes from a humble background, with his parents Constant and Alphina leaving Sierra Leone in the 1990s to escape from the civil war in the country at the time that claimed several lives.
The current World No. 20's father later worked as a laborer at the Junior Tennis Champions Center in Maryland, which he helped build. The Center was formed in 1999, and Tiafoe and his family slept there at times. Frances Tiafoe's mother worked as a nurse. The former top-10 player also has a twin brother named Franklin.
He said back in 2020 that having his mother as a nurse was something he felt was "pretty cool" while being a kid.
"Mom worked as a nurse practitioner and we spent most of our time living with her on the other side of town. I think, as a kid, you know having your mom be a nurse is a pretty cool job," Tiafoe told the Players' Tribune.
Frances Tiafoe on father's words that changed his life
Earlier this year, Frances Tiafoe spoke to Nick Kyrgios on the Aussie's video podcast "Good Troubles with Nick Kyrgios" and talked about the hardships he faced growing up.
The American was asked about the people who were a "rock" during his childhood and he mentioned his father. Tiafoe also spoke about a particular sentence his father told him which changed his life.
"Yeah, my dad's definitely one. My dad was always saying, ‘It's not about where he starts but where you going.’ That sentence right there changed my life. He’s just so proud of me. He, my long-term girlfriend, and my twin brother," the 26-year-old said.
Frances Tiafoe will play his third successive quarterfinal at the US Open, where he will take on ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov. It will be the fourth meeting between the two, with the Bulgarian leading 3-1 in the head-to-head.
The winner of the match will take on either fourth seed Alexander Zverev or 12th seed Taylor Fritz in the semifinals of US Open 2024.
