Madison Keys had one of the best wins of her career at the 2025 Australian Open, as she overcame Iga Swiatek to reach her second Major final. The American player is coached by Bjorn Fratangelo, who is a former ATP player and who also happens to be Key's husband.
Fratangelo, a former American tennis player, retired only recently in 2023. The American player did not have much of a record on the Tour to boast about. His overall singles record was a meager 22-40 on the Tour and 1-5 in doubles. His best ranking was 99, and he has no ATP Tour titles to his name.
The former World No. 99 had a decent career on the ITF and the Challenger Tour. He had 4 titles on the Challenger Tour and 8 titles on the ITF circuit across hard and clay-court events. His last Challenger Final was in 2022 at Traralgon in Australia. He lost to Tomas Machac.
Winning the Junior French Open title was the most prominent career highlight for Fratangelo. The American player won the title in 2011 with a win over Dominic Thiem in the final.
Fratangelo and Key's coaching partnership is less than two years, as it began after the 2023 French Open. The partnership has been successful so far, as Keys has won three titles under Fratangelo's guidance, reached the semifinal of the 2023 US Open, and has now reached another career milestone by advancing to the 2025 Australian Open final.
Madison Keys will be looking to match her career-best ranking at the Australian Open
Madison Keys will be entering the second Grand Slam final of her career on Saturday (January 25) as she is allowed to take on Aryna Sabalenka on Rod Laver Arena. If the American player triumphs in the final, she will reach No.7 on the rankings, matching her best career ranking she had achieved that same back in 2016.
Keys had her maiden Major final at the 2017 US Open but lost to compatriot Sloane Stephens. The American player had reached multiple semifinals at Majors but had found it difficult to get past that stage. At the Australian Open, this will be her first final, having reached the last four on two previous occasions, in 2015 and 2023.
Overall, Keys had seven hard-court finals in her resume, with four titles on the surface. Even though she trails in the head-to-head against Sabalenka, the win over Swiatek in the semifinal will give the American player the chance to pull off an upset on Saturday.
