In one of the most astounding announcements in 2024, Novak Djokovic announced that Andy Murray would be joining his coaching team as his coach. The British player had retired from the sport at Wimbledon in July.
Andy Murray has been one of the legends of the game. A former World No. 1 and a three-time Major Champion, the Brit was one of the few in the sport who could curb the Big Three dominance of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal.
His best year came in 2016 when he won nine titles and finished the year as the World No. 1. However a hip injury sustained in 2017, curtailed Murray's career and he was never at his best again. Post his injury in 2018, Murray had a very modest 84-78 record and could add only one more title to his career tally. Since 2018, he could not get past the third round of any of the Majors that he played.
This is not the first time that Djokovic has hired a former World No.1 as his coach. He has previously worked with the likes of Boris Becker and Andre Agassi and those coaching collaborations were successful for the Serbian.
Murray has expressed his optimistic views about the Serbian winning more titles even at that fag end of his career. The new coach praised Djokovic's athletic ability and claimed that was what separated the Serb from his peers.
"But I think, if he can go out as a 38, 39-year-old and win more slams and beat Alcaraz and Sinner in big matches, he’s got a claim to be the best athlete of all time, and I think that’s exciting for me and his team to be part of that.” said Murray before the tournament.
Djokovic who is a 10-time champion at the Melbourne Major will begin his 2025 campaign against Nishesh Basavareddy.

Overall this iconic rivalry had 36 matches, with Djokovic leading 25-11. The last completed match between the duo was at the 2017 Qatar Open final, which the Serb won 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
