World No. 25 Jack Draper has created history after becoming the eighth British player to reach the last four of a tennis Major. He will face World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the semifinals of the 2024 US Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Draper defeated tenth seed Australian Alex de Minaur in straight sets 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
The 22-year-old player had never gone further than the fourth round in a Grand Slam, so his performance this year at the US Open is being highly noticed. The last Briton to win the US Open was Andy Murray in 2012.
Reflecting on his game and mentality after his quarterfinal win, Jack Draper said:
"This is not like an overnight thing for me. I've believed for a long time that I've been putting in the work and doing the right things, and I knew that my time would come."
Draper has won five titles on the ATP Challenger Tour, seven trophies on the ITF Tour, and one on the Challenger Tour. He defeated his US Open semifinal rival, Sinner, at the Queen's Championship in London in 2021.
Draper's career has been strongly supported by his parents, who have enjoyed a close connection with tennis for many years.
Who are Jack Draper's parents?
Jack Draper was born to Nicky and Roger Draper on 22 December 2001, in Sutton, London. He inherited his tennis genes from his parents, as his mother, Nicky is a junior British tennis champion. She was his coach during the early stages of his career and took him for his first tennis session at Sutton Tennis Squash Club. She said (via the Lawn Tennis Association):
"Believe it or not, he picked up a racket for the first time when he was just one, and you could see from a very young age that Jack had incredible hand-eye coordination."
Draper's father, Roger, was the chief of the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) from 2006 to 2013 and was one of its most influential figures. Before the LTA, Roger was the Chief Executive Officer of Sport England from 2003 to 2006 and is now the global business advisor for Boston Consulting Group.
Draper's family has strongly supported his career and tennis runs in his veins. He played at the University of California-Berkeley and is studying at Wake Forest University.
