Tennis fans came to Petra Kvitova's defense after she received flak for ignoring a young spectator in Miami. The Czech was even compared to a different instance involving Novak Djokovic being nice to a kid, much to the annoyance of her supporters.
On Saturday (April 1), Petra Kvitova upset Elena Rybakina 7-6(14), 6-2 in the final of the 2023 Miami Open to win her ninth WTA 1000 title. Rybakina was on a 13-match winning streak, which included a title run at the 2023 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, but she couldn't hold off her veteran opponent in Miami.
Kvitova became the second-oldest Miami Open winner, only behind Serena Williams.
As she walked towards her player's box after winning the final, Kvitova signaled to a young fan and her mother to step aside as she wanted to hug her team. A tennis page subsequently called out the Czech by merging her video with another in which Djokovic could be seen gifting his racket to a kid after one of his matches at Wimbledon.
While Djokovic's fans criticized Petra Kvitova, several fans defended her by claiming that the kid's mother was at fault and should have waited for the player to celebrate with her team.
"Leave Petra alone wtff?? She’s trying to hug her mum but that woman shoved her daughter into her face. autographs and pictures should be for after the ceremony. Why is it attack Petra day recently?" a fan tweeted.
"I mean, it's not ideal. But it's her first title this size in 5 years!! I think she has the right to celebrate her win with her team before signing balls for a pushy fan. Everyone knows that wasn't the right time to get a ball signed," another user wrote.
"Making a video like this with such different contexts is so dumb. Petra had just won her 1st WTA1000 and just wanted to see and hug her team. It wasn’t the time to sign autographs, she could’ve been sweeter in the way she said it but there no right way to react after such a win," another tweet read.

Petra Kvitova dials down expectations on clay
By winning the 2023 Miami Open, Petra Kvitova has returned to the WTA Top 10 for the first time since September 2021. Although she has just claimed her 30th tour-level title, the Czech doesn't seem too excited about the upcoming clay swing.
"I have no idea what I'm going to do now. I need some time off, for sure," Kvitova said. "But the clay is coming and of course, it will be different. I will have to spend some time on the court, unfortunately, to get used to the clay, the bouncing and moving. But I'm not putting any expectations actually. I'm just happy where I am right now. It will be a long clay season for sure, so hopefully, I can manage it."
Her recent win in Miami brought Kvitova her first WTA 1000 title since the 2018 Madrid Open. The Czech is a two-time Slam champion too, having won the Wimbledon Championships in 2011 and 2014.
