Australian tennis player Destanee Aiava has shared being mistaken for four-time Major champion Naomi Osaka. She began the 2025 Australian Open with a victory over Belgium's Greet Minnen and will face Danielle Collins next.
The 24-year-old took to X to humorously express her confusion:
"Why are people commenting and mistaking me for Naomi Osaka (i love her don’t come for me) like i’m genuinely confused why multiple people are getting me mixed up with her ??????????"
A user on X later shared a screenshot of an Instagram post featuring Aiava celebrating her first-round win. In the comments, several users had mistaken her for Osaka.
Destanee Aiava endured a challenging start against Greet Minnen, dropping the opening set 5-7. However, she showcased resilience, rallying to claim the second set 7-5 before edging out a tense third set 7-6(10-5) in the tiebreak.
The triumph marked a significant milestone in the world No. 165’s career, as she advanced to the second round of a Grand Slam for the first time. She faces Danielle Collins next, marking their first-ever encounter on tour. Meanwhile, Naomi Osaka also made an impressive start to her Australian Open campaign with a touch of redemption.

Naomi Osaka commenced her Australian Open campaign in commanding style, triumphing over Caroline Garcia in the first round at Rod Laver Arena. The Japanese dominated the opening set 6-3, but Garcia retaliated with an identical score in the second. Undaunted, Osaka regained momentum in the decider, sealing her victory with a third consecutive 6-3 scoreline. She said after the match (via Tennis.com):
"I feel like I grinded on the tour a little bit. It's a really big coincidence that I'm playing here again but I just tried to do my best. I know we played the night match here last time as well. It felt a little familiar."
Osaka faced Garcia exactly a year ago after returning from maternity leave but the Frenchwoman emerged victorious. This time, however, the Japanese star turned the tables at the Rod Laver Arena.
The victory propelled the former World No. 1 into the second round, where she will face 20th seed Karolina Muchova. The Czech advanced with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Argentina's Nadia Podoroska.
