Toni Kroos asked the German people to vote for Alexander Zverev to become the flag bearer of the nation at the upcoming Paris Olympics. Fans, however, did not like the idea as many cited the tennis player's domestic abuse allegations.
Earlier this week, the German Olympic committee nominated three men and three women to become the German flag bearers at the Olympics.
Recently retired football icon Kroos has endorsed Zverev to become the flag bearer. He took to his social media to urge fans to vote for the tennis player while also mentioning that there are "many great options" and people "can't really make a wrong decision".
Many fans were against the idea of endorsing Zverev due to the allegations he has faced. Two of his ex-girlfriends have accused him of domestic abuse. While the investigation in the first case was dropped by the ATP due to lack of evidence, the other was settled in an out-of-court settlement early in June.
"So for a wife beater and not for the best German athlete Dennis Schröder. You can see a pattern with Kroos," one fan wrote.
"Why do you support wife beaters," another fan wrote.
"Yeees, make the wife beater the standard bearer," a third fan wrote.
Here are some more fan reactions to Kroos endorsing Zverev.
"Thanks for reminding me not to vote for him again," one fan wrote.
"The Zverev who was on trial for assaulting a woman? You can do better than that, Toni!" another fan wrote.
"Why is he openly telling people to vote for someone who is one of the actual reasons why he should be scared to let his daughters go outside to present the german flag at the olympics," a third fan wrote.
Alongside Alexander Zverev, two men and three women are nominated as Germany's flag bearers for the Paris Olympics
On July 14, the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) announced the nominees for flag bearing at the upcoming Paris Olympics. They selected established male and female athletes to earn the honor.
Alexander Zverev, who won gold in 2021, Dennis Schröder, captain of the World Cup-winning basketball team, and Christian Reitz, a 2016 shooting gold medalist were the nominees on the men's side.
2016 football gold medallist and Wolfsburg player Alexandra Popp, individual and team dressage Olympic champion Jessica von Bredow-Werndl, and judo bronze medalist Anna-Maria Wagner were the nominees on the women's side.
