After last year's title decider, Wimbledon is set to witness another blockbuster final between Serbia's Novak Djokovic and Spain's Carlos Alcaraz. The two tennis giants will lock horns on Sunday, July 12, at Centre Court to decide London's men's singles champion of the 2024 season.
Meanwhile, English fans are readying themselves for a double delight on Sunday as the nation's football team gears up to take on Spain in the title clash of Euro 2024 at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, Germany.
Alcaraz, a known football fanatic, has already caused a stir among the English with a cheeky statement after defeating Russia's Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals at SW19 on Friday.
During his on-court interview, he hinted at a possible Spanish victory over Harry Kane-led England in the Euro 2024 final, invoking a roar of disbelief from the Londoners.
"It’s gonna be a really good day for Spanish people as well, you know, with the Euro Cup," Carlos Alcaraz said with a wry smile.
The defending champion, who at the time didn't know if he would be facing Djokovic or Musetti in the Wimbledon final, then tried to make amends with the crowd, saying:
"I didn't say Spain is going to win, I'm just saying that it's gonna be a really, you know, fun day."
The Spaniard's statement suggested he would be watching the Spain-England clash in London before flying home. To get it all in, however, he would be required to finish his business with Djokovic before the kick-off at the Olympiastadion on Sunday.
The football final is scheduled to begin at 21:00 CEST (Central European Summer Time) in Berlin, meaning its broadcast in London will start at 20:00 BST (British Summer Time) as Germany is an hour ahead of the United Kingdom as per the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).
Alcaraz and Djokovic will step onto Centre Court at 14:00 BST to play for the coveted Wimbledon title. Hence, their tussle would need to end within six hours of starting, to avoid an overlap with the Spain-England clash at Euro 2024.
The 2023 Wimbledon final remains Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic's longest duel
Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic have thus far met five times on court, with the Serb holding a 3-2 advantage in their head-to-head. The two first played against each other in the semifinal of the 2022 Madrid Open where Alcaraz prevailed 6-7(5), 7-5, 7-6(5) in three hours and 36 minutes.
Their second battle went the 24-time Grand Slam champion's way as he defeated the cramping Spaniard 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 in three hours and 23 minutes in a final-four clash at the 2023 French Open.
Alcaraz restored his lead in the head-to-head a few weeks later by denying the Serb an eighth Wimbledon trophy. The youngster registered a 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 to win the grasscourt Major for the first time. The duel lasted for four hours and 42 minutes, making it the longest match of their rivalry.
The duo then faced each other in the 2023 Cincinnati Masters final. Djokovic ended the three-hour-49-minute-long match as the winner with a scoreline of 5-7, 7-6(7), 7-6(4). Their latest matchup happened in the semifinals of the 2023 ATP Finals where the veteran bettered Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-2 in 90 minutes.
