Eugenie Bouchard sided with Nick Kyrgios over criticizing Iga Swiatek's doping defense. However, several fans strongly disagreed with her stance and slammed her remarks.
Swiatek tested positive for the banned substance trimetazidine on August 12. Consequently, the World No. 2 was provisionally suspended from September 12 to October 14, forcing her to miss the entire Asian swing.
She defended herself by stating that the positive result was unintentional. She attributed it to contamination in a non-prescription melatonin supplement she had been using to address jet lag and sleep issues.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) concluded that Iga Swiatek bore “no significant fault or negligence” and imposed a one-month suspension starting November 27. However, since she has already served a three-week provisional suspension, she will be eligible to return on December 4.
Nick Kyrgios, however, expressed his disapproval of the ITIA's verdict on X. The former Wimbledon finalist argued that players could now evade penalties by claiming, "We didn't know."
"The excuse that we can all use is that we didn’t know. Simply didn’t know. Professionals at the highest level of sport can now just say “we didn’t know," he said.
Former World No. 5, Bouchard later agreed to Kyrgios' statement. She re-shared the post and wrote:
"Guess so"
Several fans, however, criticized Bouchard for siding with Kyrgios, with one remarking:
"women agreeing and even interacting with a literal abus3r are the worst," they said.
"Strange that conspiracy theorists are bad players. Very strange need," a fan commented.
"Nick Kyrgios and Genie Bouchard the two biggest jokes in tennis. Thankfully they're both gone from the game," another chimed in.
Here are a few more reactions from the fans:
"Until this happens to you!," one fan wrote.
For those who may not know, Eugenie Bouchard transitioned to playing professional pickleball earlier this year. In this context, a fan wrote:
"Focus on your pickle ball career honey."
"Guess so? Girl, shut yo a** up. Go play pickle ball!" A fan said.
Nick Kyrgios has an online spat with a fan in light of Iga Swiatek's doping controversy
Akin to Iga Swiatek, Jannik Sinner also failed a doping test earlier this year. The Italian tested positive for a banned substance Clostebol, which was detected in his sample during the Indian Wells Masters. Although the ITIA cleared him, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has appealed the ruling.
A fan on X highlighted that it was "wild" that Swiatek and Sinner, who remained at the top of their respective rankings for most of the 2024 season, failed doping tests this year. Kyrgios later reacted by writing:
"OUR SPORT IS COOKED 😴😭"
Another fan responded to Kyrgios' comments writing:
"Our” sport😹 mf you don’t even play."
Kyrgios responded that he planned to play in the upcoming Australian Open and sarcastically asked the fan when they had last played a tournament.
"Playing the aus open? When’s the last time you played a professional tournament 😂 god social media has given peanuts a voice… hilarious," he wrote.
Kyrgios has confirmed his return to competition at the start of the 2025 season, with his first event being the Brisbane International.
