"Women will never be safe, men will never face consequences": Tennis fans deflated after Nick Kyrgios escapes conviction in ex-girlfriend assault case

Nick Kyrgios pleaded guilty in court to the assault case lodged against him by ex-girlfriend Chiara Passari, but it was still not enough for criminal charges to be filed against the Aussie.

Appearing in a Canberra court on Friday, the World No. 20, after failing to get the case dismissed on mental health grounds, admitted to charges formally filed by Passari in December 2021, where she accused him of pushing her onto the pavement earlier that year after a heated argument.

However, calling his actions "a single act of stupidity or frustration," Magistrate Beth Campbell spared the 27-year-old of criminal proceedings. While Kyrgios did an admirable job in pleading guilty, not the norm for most high-profile names accused in such cases, tennis fans were still angry over the final verdict.

With Alexander Zverev also recently escaping conviction on his domestic violence charges (in his case, it was "insufficient" evidence), fans were more disappointed in the system than at Kyrgios himself. One fan lamented how women will "never" be safe in the world and men will "never" face the consequences of their actions, tweeting:

"Women will never be safe. Men will never face consequences. Praying for Chiara and her loved ones right now."

In addition to the "single act of stupidity," another main reason for the judge dismissing the case was that too much time had elapsed since the filing of the charges. Noting how it was only because Nick Kyrgios repeatedly kept pushing his court appearance to keep playing tennis, one Twitter user was left fuming.

Their only hope was waiting to see how the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) would respond now, given that the Australian had pleaded guilty.

"A slap on the wrist (if that) and a 'don't do it again' in exchange for a guilty plea. The time 'elapsed' was due to Kyrgios wanting to keep playing tennis. Mess. I wonder what the ATP will do with this guilty plea. Kyrgios said he did it, in a court of law. There is nothing to hide behind for the ATP. You're either a serious organization or a sham."

Here are a few more reactions from disappointed tennis fans:

Meanwhile, Nick Kyrgios is currently recovering from a knee injury that kept him out of the Australian Open at the start of the year. Having undergone surgery, the Australian will be out of action until the Indian Wells Open in March at least.

Speaking to the media recently, his manager also maintained the timeline, adding that Kyrgios and his team were very happy with the results of the surgery and that they were waiting with bated breath to see him back on the tennis court again.
