The Roger Federer-backed Laver Cup recently rolled out tickets for its 2024 edition and tennis fans have registered their reactions to the prices. This year's event will be held from September 20-22 at the Uber Arena in Berlin, Germany.
Team Europe and Team World will be pitted against each other over three days of on-court action, as the latter look to defend their title.
Team Europe's challenge will be led by Top 10 competitors Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, and Casper Ruud. 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal will also be part of the team, as will Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas. The team will play under the captaincy of Bjorn Borg.
For Team World, 2024 US Open runner-up Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, and Ben Shelton will defend the title. They will be joined by World No. 20 Alejandro Tabilo and Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo, with John McEnroe as team captain.
Rather than the star-studded lineups, however, the ticket prices have been the talk among some in the tennis community.
Fans on Reddit have slammed the prices set for the tournament co-owned by former World No. 1 Roger Federer, with one fan saying the prices wouldn't be justified by Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic competing in their "primes."
"I wouldn't pay that price to see Federer vs Djokovic in their primes. It's just not a sensible use of money. Even if I was filthy rich," the fan wrote.
Another fan wrote,
"Crazy ticket prices, better to spend it during grand slams."
Here are a few more fan reactions:
"Laver Cup is a pointless money grab," a fan commented.
"There are reasons Federer is a billionaire... this is one of them," a fan added.
"Why does tennis struggle to attract new fans?" another fan said.
"I went last year (had committed to it as a family trip, so went ahead with it) and had a fun time, but it was absolutely not worth the crazy prices, especially last year when it was really lacking in big names. This year is a much better lineup for Team Europe but still … these prices are crazy for what you actually get," a fan wrote.
