Tennis fans were outraged by the Italian Open organizers' mishandling of Elena Rybakina and Anhelina Kalinina's trophy presentation on Saturday, May 20.
Rybakina secured her second WTA 1000 title of the year after Kalinina was forced to retire due to a left thigh injury. The final was marred by a series of unsavory incidents, even before play began.
Originally slated for Saturday, May 20 at 7:00 pm local time, the match was delayed due to multiple rain interruptions throughout the day. It did not commence until well past 11:00 pm.
The Italian Open finalists then found themselves embroiled in crowd drama during the trophy presentation, as the event organizers were repeatedly booed. This was supposedly due to the inconvenient scheduling of the match.
Tennis fans worldwide took to social media to express their disappointment with the trophy presentation ceremony. They also heavily criticized Italian fans in the stadium for their disrespectful behavior towards Elena Rybakina and Anhelina Kalinina.
One fan wrote that the the people in the stadium should be ashamed of themselves for their lack of respect towards the players.
"You should be ashamed! this ceremony is one big embarrassment. No respect for girls," a fan said.
Another fan expressed their disappointment with the organisers for the trophy presentation ceremony, calling it "scandalous".
"This is joke not a final WTA1000. Shame on you. The trophy ceremony was scandalous and such amateur. You even didn’t knew who is Kalinina and who Rybakina, you switched trophies, you got the order wrong. Winning trophy to Rybakina gave some hostess, instead tournament director," the fan tweeted.
