Roger Federer recently recalled his embarrassing wardrobe malfunction at the 2007 Wimbledon Championship when he wore his pants backward during the trophy presentation ceremony. The Swiss defeated Rafael Nadal in the final, 7–6(9–7), 4–6, 7–6(7–3), 2–6, 6–2, to clinch the title. It was also a rematch of the final from the previous season.
At the 2007 Wimbledon Championships, Federer made history by equaling Bjorn Borg’s record of five straight Wimbledon titles, which he had started winning in 2003. On Wednesday, the official Wimbledon Instagram account posted a video reminiscing about the incident. A few hours after the post, the 42-year-old shared the video on his Instagram story and captioned it “Yikes” together with a silly face and a laughing emoji.
In the video, the former World No.1 narrated how he nervously tried to put his hands in his pockets but realized his pants were on backward. He was concerned about how he would look in photos but didn’t care since no one knew. The eight-time Wimbledon winner concluded that it was the most embarrassing moment of his career.
"As I'm walking over, I try to put my hands in my pocket, because I'm nervous you know about the handshake, and about receiving the trophy, I realize as I put my hands in the pocket, it's not possible, it's going backward and I'm realizing "oh my God I put the pants the wrong way". When I got the trophy I lift it up and go like "It's gonna look so bad in the pictures but I don't care and nobody knows. Anyway it was the most classic funny and maybe the most embarrassing moment of my career” - He said
Roger Federer on return to Wimbledon - “I’m happy at home but the kids said ‘No we wanna come to Wimbledon this year, you were last year without us!”
The Swiss, who retired in 2022, recently spoke about attending the 2024 Wimbledon Championships with his children during an interview at an event organized for the screening of his documentary, “Federer: Twelve Final Days,” which detailed the last 12 days of his career leading up to the 2022 Laver Cup.
In the interview, he mentioned missing the sport and expressed his intention to attend the 2024 edition of the grass-court major with his kids, due to their insistence.
"I'm missing tennis, of course I am, still playing sometimes, not on the Centre Court but I follow it a lot, I miss it, that’s why I sometimes come back to the game, see my friends and sort of my tennis family," the 42-year-old said.
"I'm making plans, kids are pushing me there. I’m happy at home but the kids said ‘No we wanna come to Wimbledon this year, you were last year without us!’, so, hey, then we go to Wimbledon. Most likely I'll be there, I don’t know if we’re gonna watch any matches but I’ll be in the Wimbledon village, so try to spot me there.” Federer said
Federer's last appearance at the Wimbledon Championships was in 2021. He defeated Adrian Mannarino, Richard Gasquet, Cameron Norrie, and Lorenzo Sonego before losing to Hubert Hurkacz 3-6, 6-7(4), 0-6 in the quarterfinals.
