Carlos Alcaraz is already in the French capital, gearing up to compete at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Since his arrival, he has been getting acquainted with the environment. Recently, Mardy Fish teased the Spaniard for becoming the center of attention when he posed with the Dutch women's hockey team at the tournament.
The 21-year-old is representing Spain alongside other ATP stars like Rafael Nadal, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Pablo Carreño Busta, and Marcel Granollers. On Wednesday, the Dutch women's hockey team posted a picture featuring Alcaraz at the Olympic Village. The same post included another picture with Alcaraz’s doubles partner for the Olympics, 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal, posing for the camera with the Dutch men's hockey team.
A few hours after the post, Mardy Fish reposted a tweet on X (formerly Twitter) that quoted Carlos Alcaraz saying he’d be staying at the Olympic Village during the tournament. Fish teased the Spaniard for his picture, and ironically tweeted that Alcaraz wasn’t being sly for taking pictures with the women's team and added a laughing emoji.
“You ain’t sly Carlito” - Fish said
The Spaniard is enjoying a spectacular season, winning 25 matches and losing only five. He is coming into the Olympic Games with three trophies under his belt: the Indian Wells Open, his first French Open (making him the youngest man to win majors on all surfaces), and his second Wimbledon title, which he secured earlier in July by defeating 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic in the final.
Carlos Alcaraz is the only first-timer in Spain's tennis squad for Paris Olympics
Carlos Alcaraz is the only ATP star representing Spain for the first time att the Olympic Games. Despite turning pro in 2018 and already competing on the ATP tour before the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Alcaraz did not qualify to represent Spain at the Olympics as he entered the top 100 in the ATP rankings in May 2021. Fast forward to 2024, he has won four Grand Slam titles, topped the ATP rankings for a cumulative 36 weeks, and is the World No.2.
The likes of Rafael Nadal, Marcel Granollers, and Pablo Carreño Busta have previously flown the Spanish flag at the Olympics. Nadal has won two gold medals representing Spain at the Olympics: gold in men's singles in Beijing in 2008, and gold in doubles with Marc López at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Carreño Busta won the bronze medal in men's singles at the Tokyo Olympics, while Granollers represented Spain at the 2012 Olympics. Davidovich Fokina represented Spain at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as well, but neither him nor Granollers have won a medal.
